The music world mourns: AKA's untimely death shocks fans and loved ones

By Lindelwa Masuku

It is with great sadness that we report the untimely death of Kiernan Forbes, better known as AKA, one of South Africa's most beloved rappers.

AKA, who was just 35, was known for his many hits and accolades throughout his career, including the Best Male Artist Award at the SA Music Awards in 2012.

AKA was a talented and beloved artist, known for his hits "Fela in Versace," "Composure," and "Run Jozi."

The parents of Kiernan Forbes, have in a statement, confirmed  his passing.

In the statement, the parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes expressed that they are awaiting further details from the police, adding that in this time of grief, they are appealing for “compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days”.

His parents have expressed their "extreme sadness" at the loss of their son and asked for privacy during this difficult time.

He had a daughter, Kairo, with DJ Zinhle and was in a relationship with rapper Nadia Nakai at the time of his death.

AKA was shot and killed in Durban, where he had been for a performance.

According to a first responder, he was shot while standing on a pavement shortly after 22:00. Resuscitation efforts at the scene were unsuccessful.

A police officer on the scene told reporters that the AKA and Tibz were the only people who were shot. “What we can confirm for now is that a well-known musician, a 35-year-old, and his body guard, aged 34 were shot and killed in Morningside, on Florida Road."

The sudden passing of AKA comes months after the fatal shooting of South African known artist, DJ Sumbody and the most recent shooting of Bacardi artist Vusi Ma R5.

Many have seen this as no coincidence, expressing the common thread of the nature of the shootings, as well as the lack of safety for South African artists.

Just a few days ago, another well-known South African musician, Cassper Nyovest spoke out on how he has increased his personal security because he doesn't feel safe. Nyovest was a close friend and business partner to DJ Sumbody and has since expressed how his death has opened his eyes.

Following AKA’s passing, police have since expressed that a double case of murder has been opened.

It is still unknown who was behind the senseless killing, but police are investigating the two counts of murder.

Our hearts go out to AKA's family, friends, and fans. His passing is a huge loss to the South African music industry, which has already seen too many young stars taken from us too soon.

We pray for peace and comfort for those who loved him and that justice will be served in this tragedy.

Rest in peace, AKA, your music will live on forever.
