First Thursdays: Your Poetic Seclusion

By Katlego Mereko

First Thursdays is a collaboration between Studiosmart gallery and Poetic Thursdays - a live music and poetry platform that hosts monthly events in Soweto.

The show features local bands and DJs every month at Native Rebels Restaurant in Jabavu, Soweto. It stands right across the iconic Morris Isaacson High School and features a vintage rooftop with an aesthetically pleasing overview of Soweto spilling before your eyes.

The likes of Tubatsi Mpho Moloi, Pg 13, art24 and DJ Castro and others have graced this platform that I rapidly becoming a force to reckoned with in the Joburg arts scene. It is a formidable platform that the audience can enjoy and that the artists can take pride in.

Additionally, an exhibition by a well-known fine artist is another creative offering on show for the night.
