The protests at Wits University have led to the death of one person, who was shot dead allegedly by a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Wednesday, 10 March 2021. The University's  Student Representative Council is leading the ongoing demonstration which is said to have been sparked by the institution's  failure to allow students with historical debts to register for the new academic year. 

The circumstances of the incident are still unclear, however, it is alleged that the victim was a bystander and  had not been taking part in the protest. 

Speaking to NewzRoom Akrika  Wits SRC’s Bonga Makhanya  said police were shooting randomly, including people who were not partaking in the student protest.
