The City of Tshwane cannot seem to keep themselves out of headlines. This time, the disgraced former Executive Mayor of the City, Dr Murunwa Makwarela has had heads turn, handing himself over to the police on Monday morning.

Former Congress of the People Councillor in Tshwane, Dr Murunwa Makwarela was spotted this morning at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria. This is for what has been described as to hand himself over.

The past couple of weeks have proven to be quite chaotic for the City of Tshwane, with Makwarela at the centre of it all.

Following the resignation of Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor, Randall Williams as the Executive Mayor of the City in February, Makwarela, who was speaker at the time was elected as Williams’ replacement.

However, his tenure was short lived, lasting about two weeks. This is as the DA brought about allegations of his insolvency dating back to 2016.

Makwarela was subsequently removed from the position, following his failure to produce proof of his rehabilitation through a clearance certificate, by the deadline set by the DA.

With Makwarela having brought this proof a day after his removal, he was subsequently reinstated as the Executive Mayor of the City.

However, this was short lived, with the Chief Registrar in the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Tumelo Ledwaba, announcing that no rehabilitation order had ever been issued by the courts regarding Makwarela’s alleged insolvency.

This saw the DA open a criminal case against him of fraud, and later his resignation as mayor and Councillor.

Now, weeks later, Makwarela will have to live his fate of his alleged fraudulent activity.

Following confirmed reports of him handing himself over, he is set to appear in the Commercial Crimes Court soon.

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
