The second weekend of June saw Bafana Bafana defeat Morocco while Pitso Mosimane joined Al Wahda FC in the UAE and Spain were crowned the champions of the UEFA Nations League.

1. Bafana Bafana defeated Morocco in honour of the late Clive Barker

Bafana Bafana put up arguably their most impressive performance for years to defeat Morocco 2-1 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group K match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

In the opening minutes of the match both sides showed attacking intentions but it was the hosts that broke the deadlock first through an own goal by Munir Mohamedi in the 5th minute of the encounter.

The first half ended with South Africa 1-0 to the good, though they blew a great chance to add to their lead later on when Zakhele Lepasa saw his low shot smothered by Munir.

However, Lepasa did find the back of the net inside three minutes of the second half, tapping home from close range after Munir could only half stop Mihlali Mayambela’s shot, to make it 2-0.

Lepasa then celebrated with arms outstretched on either side in the ‘airplane’ – a touching tribute to former Bafana Bafana coach Clive Barker, who passed away last weekend.

Bafana were punished at the hour mark when Hakim Ziyech got in behind Innocent Mala and unleashed a tempestuous shot that fizzed past Ronwen Williams in the 60th minute to add more drama into the encounter.

Hugo Broos' charger held on for the win as they moved to the summit of group K in the qualifiers.

2. Pitso Mosimane launched the PMSS

Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane, launched the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools programme on Saturday afternoon.

At a packed Maslow Hotel in Sandton, Mosimane was joined by the Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi as well as the MEC for Education in Gauteng Matome Chiloane.

With the Technical Director of SAFA also gracing the media with his presence, Mosimane has revealed that the PMSS will be working closely with the South African Football Association in making sure that the mandate of the programme will achieve the desired results.

“I was discovered from school and I was recruited from professional football based on the way I played and executed my game so I believe the quality that is needed from South Africa to make it at the highest level starts from the schools.

We all know if you want rugby boys, which schools will give us those rugby players and we also know if you want cricket players which schools will give us those players, so my dream is to have a football school in South Africa and PMSS is about mastering the ball at an early age, age-specific training and proper development structures," Mosimane said.

The South African tactician furthermore revealed that the PMSS is not about creating soccer tournaments or competitions but rather it is about mass participation that will enable the young soccer stars to showcase their talents and ability with imminent growth as the primary goal.

“The difference at PMSS is, first we are mass participation and we give everybody a chance to play and that is because I never played at clubs when I was young, I played at schools.

The ultimate target for PMSS is to have a football school, a school that is academically and  properly balanced like all the other schools, but also a school that specializes in football," Mosimane added.

With the PMSS programme already in action at two Curro Schools: Meridian Cosmo City and Northern Academy, and in three PMSS locations in Midrand, Boksburg and North Riding, PMSS aims to take South African youth football development by storm.

PMSS caters for boys and girls between the ages of 6 years and 13 years and this strategy is in line with the PMSS objective, which is to “Create the Player of Tomorrow”, starting the player development journey at grass roots level.

3. Pitso Mosimane has joined Al Wahda FC

Al Wahda FC welcome Pitso Mosimane

The United Arab Emirates club Al Wahda announced on Saturday that Pitso Mosimane would become the new head coach of the team following his departure from Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli.

Al Wahda FC released a statement confirming that the 58-year-old will lead the first team as the head coach of the club.

The Club’s Board of Directors welcomes Mr Mosimane to the Home of Champions; wishing him the success in serving the club’s leadership, administration and fans ambitions," the club stated on its official Twitter account.

Founded in 1974, Wahda is based in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi and completed the 2022/2023 season with a third position in the recently concluded Pro League.

With Mosimane's arrival, Al Wahda aims to regain their prominence on the domestic and continental stages, fostering a renewed sense of ambition within the squad while for Mosimane, Al Wahda marks his fifth managerial venture, adding another distinguished chapter to his illustrious career in which he has won 19 major trophies in his coaching career.

4. Spain defeated Croatia to claim UEFA Nations League title

Spain players celebrate winning the UEFA Nations League

Spain won the 2023 UEFA Nations League after defeating Croatia 5-4 on penalties in the final on Sunday at Rotterdam.

Both teams had chances before the break, though neither side was able to break the deadlock as the second period began with some nervy moments for Unai Simon in the Spain goal, but it took changes from the two managers to breathe life into the game at the sharp end.

Substitute Dani Carvajal converted the winning spot-kick with a Panenka after the game had finished goalless after extra-time, giving head coach Luis de la Fuente, only appointed Luis Enrique's successor in December, a trophy-winning start to his tenure.

It was a heartbreaking outcome for serial overachievers Croatia, who, four days on from their extra-time win over the Netherlands in the semis, once again fall painfully short of a historic triumph.
