The first weekend of June saw Manchester City lift the FA Cup while Al Ahly took a slender lead ahead of the 2nd leg of the CAF Champions League final and Max Verstappen won the Spanish Grand Prix.
1. Manchester City defeated Manchester United to lift the FA Cup
Ilkay Gundogan led Manchester City to their second title in the 2022/23 season after scoring a brace in the FA Cup final against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.
Gundogan scored the fastest goal in the FA Cup final history after just 12 seconds to make sure City started the match on the front foot.
However, at a packed Wembley Stadium, United restored parity just before halftime through a Bruno Fernandes penalty.
But the City captain, in what could be his final game for the club on English soil, volleyed home the winner six minutes into the second half.
The victory means that City are just one game away from a historic treble with the UEFA Champions League final on the horizon against Inter Milan.
2. Al Ahly head into the 2nd leg of the CAF Champions League final with a 2-1 aggregate lead
Al Ahly took a commanding 2-1 lead in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final against Wydad Casablanca on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils showed their confidence by playing on the front foot from the first whistle, with the reigning champions seemingly okay with Al Ahly having the ball for most of the time.
At a packed Cairo International Stadium, Al Ahly took the lead through Percy Tau on the stroke of halftime to set the crowd into a frenzy heading into the break.
Al Ahly then continued with their dominance in the second half as Mahmoud Kahraba scored the second goal of the encounter with Al Ahly taking control of the tie.
The Egyptian giants were then made to rue their missed chances in the second half as Saifeddine Bouhra pulled a goal back for Wydad in the 86th minute of the encounter.
The two sides will continue where they left off next week in the second leg of the final at the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco.
3. Cape Town Spurs defeated Maritzburg United to keep PSL hopes alive
Cape Town Spurs took the lead in the race for promotion to the PSL with a 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The victory saw Spurs move to six points in the PSL’s promotion/relegation mini-league play-offs after three games.
Should Spurs win or draw against Casric Stars on Wednesday the 7th of June, Maritzburg United will have to win all their remaining matches to keep their hopes of retaining their league status alive.
Fadlu Davids' side will next meet Casric Stars on the 10th of June before entertaining Cape Town Spurs on the 14th of June 2023 in their last playoff match.
4. Verstappen recorded another victory ahead of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell
