Top 5 sporting moments of the weekend

The last weekend of August produced some entertaining moments in the world of sport as Kaizer Chiefs recorded their first win in the league while Orlando Pirates advanced to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League and the Springboks hammered New Zealand away from home.

1.Kaizer Chiefs eased the pressure from Molefi Ntseki with a resounding victory.

Kaizer Chiefs' Pule Mmodi celebrates his second goal against AmaZulu

Kaizer Chiefs registered their first league victory in the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season after defeating AmaZulu 3-0 on Saturday night at FNB Stadium.

Pule Mmodi netted a brace, while Edson Castillo also scored a late goal to ease the pressure of head coach Molefi Ntseki who has received a lot of criticism in the past couple of days.

The hosts were on the front foot from the get-go as Mmodi opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute.

Despite the blistering start, Chiefs’ strong start didn’t translate into any dominance as AmaZulu held the bulk of possession and Mmodi’s effort proved to be one of only two shots on target for the opening 45 minutes.

AmaZulu probed in the early stages of the second half but just before the hour mark, Chiefs doubled their lead with a devastating counter-attack which involved Mduduzi Mdantsane, Du Preez, Tebogo Postsane and Mmodi finishing the move off in style.

Despite several substitutions from both sides in the final 20 minutes, Chiefs added another goal through Castillo to move up to the 11th spot on the log while the Durban-based outfit are still without a win, or goal in their first four games and languishing in the 13th spot.

2. Pirates to face Jwaneng Galaxy in the next round of the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League

After defeating Djabal Club 3-0 in the second leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie at Orlando Stadium on Friday night, Orlando Pirates are set to face Jwaneng Galaxy in the next round of the CAF Champions League.

Jwaneng Galaxy advanced to the next round of the competition after defeating Vipers SC across the two legs of the encounter.

With the dates and venues yet to be announced for clash, the last time the two sides met was in 2021 during the preliminary stages of the CAF Confederations Cup where the Buccaneers won both legs, 3-0 away and 1-0 home to pave their way into the next round.

3. Darwin Nunez saved the day for Liverpool against Newcastle United

Liverpool's Darwin Nunez celebrates after scoring Liverpool's goal against Newcastle United

Darwin Nunez struck a late double to snatch an incredible 2-1 victory for 10-man Liverpool after Virgil van Dijk was sent off against Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Uruguayan striker came off the bench to rifle home a superb effort nine minutes from time to level matters, before lashing in Mo Salah's pass deep into stoppage time to stun Eddie Howe's men.

An incident-packed encounter exploded into life when former Everton forward Anthony Gordon punished an error from Trent Alexander-Arnold to race clear and open the scoring on 25 minutes.

It capped a dreadful opening for Alexander-Arnold who was lucky to escape a second yellow card inside six minutes when he followed up a caution - for throwing the ball away - by pulling back Gordon in full flight.

Liverpool’s day then soured further when Van Dijk was given his marching orders for a poorly timed challenge on Alexander Isak as the striker turned to surge in on goal.

Newcastle continued to look the more likely in the second half with Miguel Almiron going close when he clipped the post following a wonderful solo run.

However, substitute Nunez seized upon a mistake by Sven Botman to level before sensationally winning it with a last-gasp strike.

The result means Liverpool are unbeaten in fourth spot, two points adrift of leaders Manchester City while Newcastle are down in 13th after two defeats from three outings.

4. The Springboks emerged victorious in Twickenham against New Zealand

The Springboks players celebrating a try against New Zealand

The Springboks gave the All Blacks their most emphatic reality check ahead of the 2023 Rugby World Cup after claiming a record 35-7 victory at Twickenham on Saturday.

The Springboks scored five tries to one with flyhalf Manie Libbok converting all of them – to head for France on Saturday with momentum maintained and the milestone of having eclipsed the previous heaviest defeat (21 points) suffered by New Zealand – a 28-7 reverse in Sydney in 1999.

The Springboks' intensity, lineout efficiency and scrum dominance were too much for New Zealand as Siya Kolisi, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi and Kwagga Smith scored all the tries for Jacques Nienaber's side.

This was their last warm-up match before heading to the Rugby World Cup in Frace which commences on the 8th of September 2023.

5. Max Verstappen continued with his dominance in Formula 1

Red Bulls' Max Verstappen celebrates his Dutch Grand Prix victory

Max Verstappen emerged victorious from a chaotic Dutch Grand Prix to further extend his Formula 1 points lead.

In a race that featured a lengthy red flag for rain, Verstappen was dominant as he claimed his 11th win of the season from 13 and ninth consecutive victory.

Fernando Alonso finished second for Aston Martin as Sergio Perez lost a podium for speeding in the pit-lane promoting Pierre Gasly to a first podium of the year.

Sergio Perez finished 4th as Carlos Sainz finished 5th for Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton had another disappointing run finishing 6th for Mercedes-Benz.
