2. Bafana Bafana failed to beat Liberia at home

Bafana Bafana at the Orlando Stadium against Liberia

Liberia came from two goals down to take a point away from home against Bafana Bafana at the Orlando Stadium on Friday night as the two sides played out to a 2-2 draw in an entertaining AFCON qualifier.

In a match where Bafana Bafana dominated the first half, Lyle Foster opened the scoring after 11 minutes to give Bafana the lead before the Burnley striker scored his and Bafana's second goal with a brilliant header from Teboho Mokoena's corner kick as the sides went to halftime with Bafana leading 2-0.

Bafana would have themselves to blame as in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Hugo Broos' charges had a plethora of goalscoring chances, but were either not clinical in their passing or shooting apart from Tau's free-kick which was supposed to be an indirect free-kick.

Liberia made some changes that influenced the game and that's when they managed to pull one back through Tonia Tisdell's free kick in the 68th minute.

Mohammed Sangare who was another substitute for Liberia stunned Bafana in the 90th minute to send the crowd into deafening silence as the West African side head to the reverse fixture with a valuable point.

The two teams will meet again in Monrovia on Tuesday for what is expected to be a thrilling clash as whoever wins secures their tickets to the Afcon tournament in Ivory Coast next year.

3. France, England and Portugal victorious at the 2024 EURO Qualifiers

France players celebrating after scoring their first goal against Netherlands

Newly appointed France captain Kylian Mbappe led his side to a convincing 4-0 victory against the Netherlands in group B of the EURO 2024 qualifier.

Mbappe, named skipper after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris ended his international career in January, set up Antoine Griezmann for the opener before scoring the third, after Dayot Upamecano had doubled the tally in a first-half blitz, before wrapping the scoring up late in front of an ecstatic crowd.

The result was a slap in the face for Ronald Koeman in charge of his first match since he took over from Louis van Gaal, after the Oranje reached the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar, for his second stint after a first spell from 2018-2020.

Elsewhere, England defeated Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley in a Group C encounter of the 2024 UEFA EURO qualifiers as Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka continued with their exceptional form in front of the goal.

Kane broke the deadlock in the 37th minute of the encounter before Saka scored 3 minutes later as England held on for another comfortable victory after beating Italy 2-1 on Thursday.

The victory means that England is currently occupying the first spot in Group C of the EURO qualifiers having played two matches and winning two.

Finally, on Sunday night Cristiano Ronaldo scored a braced as Portugal thrashed Luxembourg 6-0 in group J of the EURO 2024 qualifier at the Luxembourg Stadium to make it two wins from two matches in as many games.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock in the 9th minute before Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva scored in a space of three minutes to put Portugal 3-0 up in the opening 20 minutes.

Ronaldo was at it again when he scored his brace in the 31st minute of the encounter as the visitors went to halftime leading 4-0.

With the two teams heading into the second half with Portugal still showing some aggression in front of goal, substitute Otavio and Rafael Leao scored the fifth and sixth goal late in the second half to conclude another stellar performance from Roberto Martinez's charges.

The victory means that Portugal has now won two consecutive matches without conceding a goal to make sure Martinez's tenure starts on a positive note.

4. Proteas create history at the Wanderers

Quinton De Kock celebrating his century against West Indies during the 2nd T20 match

The Proteas defeated West Indies by 6 wickets with 7 balls left in the second T20 match at SuperSport Sports Park to level the three matches T20 series 1-1.

Opening batsman Quinton de Kock smashed 100 runs from 44 balls as the Proteas made history by chasing down the highest score in the history of T20 cricket.

De Kock alongside Reeza Hendricks guided the Proteas to a 152 runs-opening partnership before Rilee Rossouw, David Miller, Aiden Markram, and Heinrich Klaasen made sure their contributions take the Proteas over the line at a packed SuperSport Park.

Earlier on, West Indies batsman Johnson Charles took the Proteas bowlers to the cleaners, striking the sixth-fastest ton in T20Is.

The right-hander silenced the SuperSport Park crowd, finding the boundary on 22 occasions hitting 10 fours and 11 sixes on his way to 118 off 46 deliveries as the Windies recorded 258/5, their highest team total in a T20 match setting the Proteas a total of 259 for victory.

The successful run chase means that the Proteas now hold the T20 and ODI world records after their famous 438/9 chasing Australia's 434/4 at the Wanderers in 2006 in the 50-over format.

The third and final T20 match is on Tuesday at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

5. The Pumas and the Natal Sharks were victorious in the latest edition of the Currie Cup

The Free State Cheetahs players celebrating a try at the Free State Stadium against the Blue Bulls

The Pumas defeated the Griquas 28-13 in round three of the Currie Cup at the Mbombela Stadium to move up to the second spot on the table while the Natal Sharks thrashed the Western Province 20-7 at the Kings Park Stadium.

It was a scrappy match of few chances, but the Sharks made the most of theirs to pick up their second win in three games, while Province fell to a first defeat after winning their opening two matches comfortably.

After round three of the Currie Cup that also saw the Free State Cheetahs defeat the Blue Bulls 32-7, the side from Free State is sitting comfortably at the summit of the table while the Griffons are still rooted at the bottom of the table with 0 points.
