Third time lucky? Ekurhuleni City Council will attempt to hold its third sitting today

The Ekurhuleni Council Chambers are set to be scene where Council members will battle it out once again to have their party views heard, and possibly succeed in giving the Speaker of Council, Raymond Dhlamini the boot.

The Ekurhuleni City Council are set to sit for a Council sitting in what will be the third one of the year.

The previous two are known to have collapsed with the second one especially seeing the Speaker of Council, Raymond Dhlamini as well as the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (VF+) leave the Council.

This act allowed for loopholes in the Council system to prevail and for proceedings to resume without him, as the majority of the council was present.

Following this decision, the City Manager was able to take over as Speaker of the Council, where thereafter she called for the Council to elect an Acting Speaker.

Dhlamini was subsequently voted out by 126 councillors from the EFF, ANC, and several smaller parties, and EFF councillor Nthabiseng Tshivhenga was elected as the acting speaker of council.

With the agreement that Tshivhenga would occupy this position until a new speaker was elected, this plan was short lived, with Dhlamini taking the matter to court to have it declared as invalid.

Dhlamini was successful and this saw him reinstated as Speaker as well as ANC council member Jongizizwa Dlabathi, who was elected as the acting whip of council as well as Tshivhenga having to return to their previous positions in council.

With council members having expressed their concerns about the last meeting running later than expected, the Council agreed to move some items to today’s scheduled council meeting.

Among the items carried over from the agenda include, the vote of no-confidence that was tabled against the Speaker of Council.

The EFF has since reiterated its dissatisfaction with Dhlamini and have vowed to remove him in today’s sitting.

Will today be the third time lucky for parties wanting to remove Dhlamini?
