History was created at the Newlands Cricket Ground on Tuesday night as the Momentum Proteas defeated Bangladesh by 10 wickets to reach the semifinals of T20 Women's World Cup for the first time ever.

After losing to Sri Lanka in the opening match and Australia in the third match respectively, the Momentum Proteas knew that nothing but a victory would be enough for them to progress through and finish group A in second spot behind Australia.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that came back to haunt them as the Momentum Proteas bowlers were on fire with the ball restricting Bangladesh to 113/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka both claimed 2 wickets each while Nonkululeko Mlaba and Shabnim Ismail both accounted for the remaining two Bangladesh wickets as Nigar Sultana was the only top scored batter for the Asian side with 30 runs.

Chasing 114 for victory, the Momentum Proteas opening batters Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits smashed 117/0 in 17.5 overs to guide the South African side to victory at a packed Newlands Cricket Ground.

Player of the Match Wolvaardt smashed 66 runs out of 56 balls while Brits was unbeaten for 50 runs in 51 balls.

It was a much better performance by the South African side that will now face England in Friday's semifinal at the Newlands Cricket Ground while defending champions Australia will take on India in the first semifinal on Thursday at the Newlands Cricket Ground.
