The Gauteng Department has temporarily suspended visiting hours to all Gauteng public healthcare facilities. The Department says this is because of the escalating third wave of COVID-19 infections. Only one visitor per patient will be allowed in exceptional cases. 

Gauteng has seen a major rise in deaths as well as new infections of Covid 19 in the plight of the third wave. In July the infection rate is expected to climb even higher, there are fears that health facilities will be stretched beyond capacity.

The province recorded over 7,500 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the South African Medical Association (SAMA)  says Gauteng's hospitals are running out of beds. Some patients are now being transferred to other facilities.
