The Bogey team curse is lifted as Bafana Bafana beat Cape Verde

By Seth Moloi, Football Observer

It took 120 minutes of football, plus 4 penalty kicks saves to lift the bogey team curse as Bafana Bafana progressed to the semi-finals beating the stubborn Blue Sharks after 3 failed attempts, they had to do it via the penalty shootout.

Goalkeeper and captain,Ronwen Williams produced shaman-like super powers to cast away the spell that's been haunting Bafana Bafana for years.

He kept his fourth consecutive clean sheet, where he kept out 1v1 situation during the course of the match, and also saved four penalties during the penalty shootout.

Bafana Bafana's perfomance was not one of their best perfomances however, they managed to keep the Blue Sharks at bay, despite being threatened for most parts of the match, they did not concede a goal.

Cape Verde dominated the match and created much clearer goalscoring opportunities than Bafana Bafana but they were wasteful in front of goals.

Most of the threat came from the left side of Bafana Bafana where Aubrey Modiba is playing as a left back, the main problem is that wingers who play in front of Modiba are relunctant to track back and assist him when the team is out of possession because he often finds hinself outnumbered by oppenents which drags Sphephelo Sithole from his position in the middle of the park to go wide to provide assistance to his left back

Mothobi Mvala has also been doing a great job in providing Modiba with cover.

If Bafana Bafana's technical team does not address this situation before they face Nigeria on Wednesday, they might suffer because Nigeria might not be as wasteful as Cape Verde in front of goals.

As it has been evident over the past few games, Nigeria is very strong on the wings and they break veru quickly with pace when they counterattack using the pace of Simon, Lookman and Osimhen.

On the left side they have Sanusi and Simon and on the right they operate with Aina and Lookman so if Bafana Bafana wingers on the left do not put in a shift without the ball, in the same way that Thapelo Morena does on the right side, Nigeria is going to hurt them with ease.

Modern football demands that wingers assist their fullbacks when the team is under threat just as much as fullbacks assist wingers offensively.

We seek week in and week out wingers like Jack Grealish at Manchester City running his lungs out to defend when the team is in danger, both Bafana Bafana wingers have to do likewise its a must in modern football.

Both Nigeria and Bafana Bafana have been very stingy when it comes to giving goals away, the Super Eagles' goalkeeper Nwabali and Bafana Bafana's keeper, Williams have more clean sheets in this tournament than any other goalkeepers.

On Wednesday night its going to be a battle of the clean sheets and only one will remain standing and as things stand, Bafana Bafana have done it, the monkey is off their back.
