Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has been included in the 33-man squad that will represent South Africa next month in the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Although Kolisi has not featured in any of the Springboks’ matches this year due to injury, head coach Jacques Nienaber is confident Kolisi will be fit enough to participate in the World Cup which commences on the 8th of September.

The squad was announced by SA Rugby president Mark Alexander at a lively event at DStv's MultiChoice City headquarters in Johannesburg.

While Lukhanyo Am, Handre Pollard and Lood de Jager were the major absentees from the squad, the South Africa national rugby union team (Saru) revealed that Pollard is struggling with a calf injury, Am has knee issues while Lood de Jager has chest problems, but they have been placed on standby with six other players.

Head Coach Jacques Nienaber’s squad featured a strong mix of experience and some of the best up-and-coming young players in the country as there are 12 players that will be playing their first World Cup while nine are going for their third appearance.

As the 2023 Rugby World Cup commences on the 8th of September 2023 in France, the Springboks will play their first pool B match against Scotland on the 10th of September 2023.
