Putco suspends bus services citing no pay and fuel price hikes

By Tshegofatso Makola

Putco commuters in Gauteng will have to find alternative means of travel for the time being as Putco has suspended its services from Thursday, citing no pay from the Gauteng government and high fuel prices.

The Putco bus service has put its foot down, suspending its services until its demands are heard.

“Putco regrets to inform passengers that the company will not be able to carry out its bus service from 4 May 2023 until further notice due to diesel shortages,”- Putco’s Lindokuhle Xulu

The bus service which has communicated its financial woes recently, expressed how the Gauteng government failed to pay a subsidy, despite having communicated that it was dipping into its fuel reserves two weeks ago, which has also contributed to the unstable financial situation.

No pay from the government means that Putco is unable to purchase fuel and keep the service running.

According to Xulu, the Department of Roads and Transport in the province had enough time to pay the subsidy adding that recent evaluation of fuel availability, made it difficult for Putco to resume services as normal today.

Xulu further expressed that the department have said that the outstanding amount should be cleared by Monday.

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
