Proteas prepare for West Indies battle

By Neo Poho

The second and final Test match in the 2 match series between the Proteas and West Indies commences on Wednesday morning at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

Fresh from the 87 runs victory in the first Test last week at SuperSport Park, the Proteas will look to duplicate that performance heading into the second Test on Wednesday in a bid to seal the series and prepare for the ODI encounters.

They will have to do that though without the services of fast right-arm bowler Anrich Nortje who experienced mild groin discomfort during the first Test and had been advised to rest by South Africa’s medical team.

Nortje played a major role in South Africa’s 87-run win in the first Test in Centurion as part of a four-pronged pace attack, taking five for 36 in the first innings.

A replacement has however, not been named despite the Proteas not having an extra specialist fast bowler in their squad.

Seam bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder could come into contention at his home ground, while the Proteas could also plan an extra spin option in the form of either Keshav Maharaj or Simon Harmer with the Wanderers having taken plenty of turn this past season.

The other option for the team and coach Shukri Conrad would be to only go in to the Test with four bowlers and an extra batter, which would allow the in-form Ryan Rickelton to return to the side and strengthen the batting.

The Test match is the final fixture for both teams in the World Test championship, the Proteas are in fourth position but cannot qualify for the final at The Oval in London in June and West Indies are also out of the running in seventh place.

Meanwhile ahead of the preparations for the second Test, the Proteas have released bowling coach Charl Langeveldt from the squad due to family reasons, with the first Test of the series subsequently his last with the Proteas, Langeveldt will be replaced by Piet Botha in the coming days.

The second Test against West Indies starts at 10am on Wednesday morning.

Temba Bavuma (capt), Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Dean Elgar, Simon Harmer, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Keegan Petersen, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton.
