Is Mamelodi Sundowns too good for the PSL?

By Seth Moloi, Football Observer

Mamelodi Sundowns have extended their unbeaten run to an unprecedented 40 games after defeating AmaZulu 3-0 in the DStv Premiership on Tuesday night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The last time they lost a match was against Supersport United at Atteridgeville on the 2nd of September 2022.

Then they have stayed on top of the log even when they were not playing league matches and no team has been able to topple them.

Sundowns' dominance in the league is not their fault, they are reaping the fruits of investing in quality players as well as assembling a suitable and highly knowledgeable technical team.

Teams which are expected to give Sundowns a run for their money, are sitting comfortably somewhere in the middle of the log table and it seems as if other teams have accepted that the only position they can fight for, is the 2nd position.

Jose Mourihno once said, "When you start accepting defeats just because your team played well and just because your players gave their best, a performance to be proud of, I think that's when the big clubs stop being big clubs."

Mamelodi Sundowns have turned the PSL into a one-horse race and as ridiculous as this may sound, maybe to make the league interesting, Sundowns should start every match on a 0-1 deficit.

This should go on until all other teams in the league get closer to the benchmark set by The Brazilians.

It's about time that the PSL teams start thinking big, otherwise the Brazilians are still going to continue dominating the league, turning it into a one-horse race.

"You're in a horse race but you're thinking like a sheep and sheeps don't win horse races." Jeanette Walls
