"I am Ecstatic” - Ronwen Williams

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams has expressed his excitement at saving four penalties in the 2023 AFCON quarterfinals against Cape Verde on Saturday night.

Williams who also won the Man of the Match accolade put in a heroic performance against the Blue Sharks and already denied them a winner in injury-time, pushing the ball onto the cross bar to keep the score at 0-0.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper then saved four penalties in the shootout, becoming the first goalkeeper to do so in the Africa Cup of Nations history.

His fourth clean sheet in the tournament sent Bafana Bafana into the semi-finals for the first time in 24 years, where they will face Nigeria on Wednesday night.

"I am ecstatic, I am over the moon, I am filled with joy and happiness, we deserve it we fought so hard to the end, we keep fighting 120 and plus minutes, almost 130 minutes.

“We fight and keep going, the guys were cramping and it just shows the desire and will we had to keep going, I am just over the moon and I am glad that we came out victorious today," Williams said.

Williams also credited team analyst Sinesipho Mali after his four penalty saves, saying he was well-prepared for the shootout.

"Credit to the analyst as well, he studied the penalties, they sent me so many penalties, so I am over the moon but once again it's not me alone, it's the whole team effort.

Big ups to the analysts for preparing the work for me to watch and study, they made my job 50% more easier because I had an idea where most of the players were going," Williams added.

Bafana Bafana next face Nigeria on Wednesday the 7th of February 2024 at 19:00 pm at the Stade Bouake Stadium with a spot in the final up for grabs.
