"Despite the loss, it was a successful tournament for us" - Suné Luus

Momentum Proteas captain Suné Luus has admitted that despite the 19 runs loss to Australia in the T20 Women's World Cup on Sunday, the Momentum Proteas had a successful tournament.

The Momentum Proteas became the first South African team both in the men's and women's cricket teams to reach the final of a T20 World Cup and Luus claims that, achieving the feat was enough although they didn't go all the way to win the showpiece.

"It was obviously a very successful tournament for us because coming into the World Cup the goal was to reach the final because we were always coming short in the semifinals so reaching the final for us was a dream come true," Luus said.

The Momentum Proteas began their T20 World Cup journey on a rather shaky start with a 3 runs loss to Sri Lanka however, they managed to come back in the second match by defeating New Zealand by 65 runs.

Although Australia got the better of the Proteas in the third match by 6 wickets, the South African side bounced back to defeat Bangladesh en route to the semifinal against England.

Luus said that she is incredibly proud of how the team managed to comeback into the tournament after such a major setback in the opening match against Sri Lanka.

Having won the hearts of many South Africans and the entire cricket fraternity in South Africa, Luus reflected on how much the team will forever be grateful for the love and support they have received throughout the tournament.

"The goal coming to the World Cup was obviously to win it but most importantly we wanted to inspire a nation and I believe we have managed to achieve that considering the warm support and love we received from the fans and our families at large, the love has certainly been amazing and overwhelming at the same time but we really grateful," the captain said.

Looking at some of the teams that were involved in the World Cup, it goes without saying that South Africa went into the tournament as underdogs and Luus couldn't hold back but to boast about how the team against all odds came out victorious especially against England in the semifinal.

"It was simply an amazing feeling to beat England in the semifinal because we really didn't start that well however, the way we picked up ourselves was truly incredible and it was definitely one of the best days of our lives," Luus added.

With women's sport in South Africa being on the rise across netball, football and now cricket, the South African captain is a very strong believer that South Africa needs to have a T20 women's league for the growth of cricket in the country but moreover to have new talent coming in from the respective provinces in the country.

"Something small like having a T20 women's league would actually help in the long run because there is a demand of cricket in the country particularly women's cricket and you do get some girls that are interested in playing cricket but because there isn't any league that means there are no teams for people to play for unfortunately," Luus alluded.

The right-handed batter is currently playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders that is currently competing in the Women's Caribbean Premier League and the 6ixty, representing Trinidad and Tobago.
