Deja Vu as Bafana Bafana clinch the Bronze Medal

By Seth Moloi, Football Observer

Ronwen Williams pulled another heroic penalty shootout perfomance as he saved two penalties against DR Congo helping the team he captains to win a bronze medal.

It was one of those lackluster perfomance by Bafana Bafana in this tournament, perhaps the toll of playing 120 minutes in the semifinals finally took its toll as players like Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena looked heavy-legged and lacked the sparked needed to galvanise the team, maybe the change of personnel in certain positions also played its part.

However, Bafana Bafana were able to their 5th clean sheet in the tournament taking the tie to the penalty shootout, which they eventually won.

DR Congo will have themselves to blame for this loss after creating enough goalscoring chances to win the match but were very wasteful in front of goals.

Bafana Bafana will be very happy to finish the tournament with a victory, site contributor @CallMeBednard had this to say, "I think its better to be a third place winner than a second place loser".

Lawrence Oyo once highlighted that "Bronze medalists are always happier than silver medalists". Logically it should be the other way around.

The thing is that the human brain does not work like mathematics, although a silver medal symbolises 2nd place, one receives it after losing a match whereas the bronze, although it symbolises 3rd place, one receives it after winning and all players love winning, this is evident as Bafana Bafana celebrated with their travelling fans after beating DR Congo.

This tournament was the best for Bafana Bafana after many years of under-perfomimg, beating high ranked teams like Morocco, Tunisia and DR Congo, pushing Nigeria all the way to a penalty shootout, keeping 5 clean sheets, seeing various players receive the Man of the Match accolades and beating overseas based is no mean feet at all.

Bafana Bafana exceeded all the expectations and silenced many critics who gave them zero chance.

Bafana Bafana made South Africa proud, indeed they are our heroes.
