1. Can you tell us about your background and how you got into fashion design?

Hi, I’m Phume. I am a mechanical engineering graduate and fashion designer. In general, I have a variety of interests and fashion has been one of them for a long time.

After I finished my degree, I was obsessed with design and wanted to marry my love for design with fashion. I sketched a few items and got them made by a seamstress. The items came out so great and I was so surprised at how intuitive the whole process was for me.

However, I knew I still had a lot to learn so I did a part-time short course in fashion design. Shortly after that, I started the brand and the rest was history.

2. Can you tell us what inspires your designs and creative process?

I really love good design and attention to detail! That’s the DNA of my brand in a nutshell. I am also inspired by problem-solving. Designing gender-neutral clothing is quite an interesting process and nailing it is rewarding because your product is appreciated and enjoyed by all.

3. Can you share a memorable moment from your journey as a designer so far?

I’ve had a lot of memorable moments, a lot of breakthroughs and victories. The most notable would probably be when I got selected as a Design Indaba Emerging Creative in 2019.

I got to showcase my work to an international audience and met connections that are still strong today!

4. Can you tell us about a project or the collection you are particularly proud of?

Haha please don’t make me choose! I’m proud of all my work. But my latest work is my greatest work so I’m proud that I pushed through and did it.

I’m speaking of course about our AW/23 Essentials Capsule.

5. How do you stay current with fashion trends and incorporate them into your
work?

In the fashion industry, you try and stay ahead of the trends and be proactive instead of reactive. I think it’s a combination of observation, personal curiosity and healthy risk apatite that help me stay ahead of the curve.

Tools like social media help you gain a sense of people’s taste which helps a lot.

6. How do you approach sustainability in your designs and production process?

Our designs are gender-neutral and adjustable. That helps the brand design efficiently and save cost on adapting designs for specific genders. We source our fabric from mills that take sustainability seriously.

We also specialise in statement pieces which we release seasonally. This limits our output and impact on the environment. Lastly, we use bio-degradable packaging and we encourage our customers to save water by wearing items multiple times between washes on our clothing tags.

7. Can you share your plans for the future of your brand and career as a designer?

Our short-term plans are to enter the retail market and grow brand awareness through participation in fashion week and collaborations with other institutions and artists.

Longer term, I want the brand to be able to host pop-ups all over the world and filter into mainstream culture. I also want the brand to grow its product portfolio and expand into other spheres of design.

8. How do you plan to make an impact and stand out in the industry?

Apart from the great design and attention to detail, we’ve discussed, producing bold and interesting campaigns to drive interest in the brand is a high priority in the plan.

Also working with more young artists and creators is a path we are exploring in order to make a potent impact.

9. What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers?

Find yourself a role model(s) in the industry; someone who’s gone before you and gotten things right. Start small, design and make clothes for yourself.

Find out where people in your neighbourhood get fabrics and find out whether there is a seamstress near you who can help you put your ideas together. Have fun and never give up! Goodluck 😊
