Brink and Makwarela could battle it out for the mayoral position in Tshwane

By Tshegofatso Makola

The Tshwane City Council sitting is currently underway, in what was supposed to see the voting in of the new Executive Mayor of the City.

With Cilliers Brink having established himself as the prominent candidate for the job, this has received quite some criticism from opposition parties in the Council due to his choice to address the media last week, ahead of being sworn in on the 23rd of February 2023.

Despite claims of Brink being unsuitable for the job, he has since been sworn in as a Council member as confirmed by the IEC, which could see him occupy the position of Executive Mayor of Tshwane by the end of today.

Meanwhile, coalitions seem to be hanging on a thread as the GOOD party has confirmed that they will be voting for Cilliers Brink. This, whilst rumours have emerged that the current speaker of Council, Murunwa Makwarela being a potential candidate for the position.

It will be a tight race between the two, with the African National Congress (ANC) having made their stance clear that they will not be putting a candidate forward for the mayoral position.

With the  Council having taken a caucus break, proceedings have since resumed, with voting for the new Executive Mayor set to take place soon in a secret ballot.

Will the so said- predicted coalitions play out as expected, or will the secrecy see Council members turn their backs on their word?

This is a developing story, more updates to follow.
