Bafana Bafana Rise - Against all odds

By Seth Moloi, Football Observer

Prophets of doom said Bafana Bafana's plane won't even be switched off because they were coming home soon.

Naysayers said beating Namibia was no big deal, because most of their players ply their trade in the South African leagues.

Some luminaries said there was no way Bafana Bafana could beat the team ranked number in Africa.

There is, perhaps no more dangerous man in this world than the man with substantial knowledge but lacks wisdom hence in the world of football with some luck such men make wonderful coaches and pundits, or else they become critics or warlocks.

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos came under harsh criticism after the his team lost the opening match Mali in the opening match of the group stages.

One of Broos' strongest traits is calmness, with calmness he is able to subdue even the chronic ticker, the most violent critic.

He remains calm while the irate fault-finder dilates like a cobra and spews the poison out of his system.

He remains focused on his task, which is coaching the national team.

Bafana Bafana have already achieved a number of milestones in this continental tournament:

1. After losing the opening match, they have not lost any match since then, (Credit should go to the technical team for identifying the problem and fixing it).

2. They have not conceded a goal in their last 3 matches in the tournament.

3. They have scored 6 goals so far in the tournament.

4. In their last 3 encounters the Man of the Match award went to Bafana Bafana players (In those matches, they were playing against teams with players who ply their trade all over Europe).

Therefore it is important that as a country we celebrate these milestones, the more small victories the team achieves, the closer they get to the main goal.

Celebrating these victories will reinforce self-belief and ability in our players which aids in the development of resilience, which is much needed especially in such a tournament.

Karl Weick, a professor at the University of Michigan says that "a small win is a concrete, complete, implemented act, by itself it may seem relatively unimportant but a series of such small wins can help reduce the feeling that the goal is unattainable"

Whether Bafana Bafana wins AFCONS 2023 or not, remains to be seen for sure is that, so far so good.

Perhaps someday critics will eventually praise Hugo Broos maybe he actually doesn't need their praise because in the words of Eli Wallach "Having the critics praise you, is like having the hangman say you have got a pretty neck".

Abu Ammar Yasir Qadhi once said "Critising is the job that requires zero qualifications".
