Bafana Bafana coach unpacks how they managed to beat Namibia

Following their impressive 4-0 victory over Namibia in the second match of the 2023 AFCON group E encounter, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed how they managed to obtain that victory and keep their hopes of progressing to the next round of the tournament alive.

Having lost their opening match against Mali, Bafana Bafana knew that a victory against Namibia was very important to head into the final match against Tunisia with 3 points.

With midfield maestro Themba Zwane scoring a brace after Percy Tau broke the deadlock via a penalty while Thapelo Maseko concluded the scoring for Broos' charges, the Belgian tactician described Zwane's man of the match performance as a reason for the victory.

"I have said it already several times, when Themba Zwane plays well the team plays good and that's what we saw today, Themba is the man with the combinations because he knew were to go and we could always give the ball to him.

If it wasn’t for him, over the two wings also, Percy and Thapelo, the guys who went deep and that hurt the defence of Namibia I don't think we could have won it, so I am very happy, not only about the result but also the way we responded after the Mali defeat," Broos said.

The victory sees Bafana Bafan sit comfortably on the second spot in group E with 3 points after 2 matches while Namibia are third also on 3 points however, with a-2 goal difference.

A draw in Bafana Bafana’s final group match against the Tunisia would at least secure a third place, depending on the result between Mali and Namibia while a win would definitely secure the knockout stages for Bafana Bafana, no matter the other result.

In case of a loss to Tunisia, South Africa could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, but the chances seem very slim as it would still need to be determined by what happens in other groups.
