Joburg Council Meeting Moving Slow As Members Request Yet Another Caucus Break

By Tshegofatso Makola

The Johannesburg City Council Meeting has halted proceedings once again following another caucus break being granted to the members by Speaker, Colleen Makhubele.

This is the third caucus break granted since the meeting commenced.

With the meeting being the first held by the City Council, not much has happened since its commencement this morning.

The first request for a caucus break was substantiated with parties' need to deliberate on preferred candidates. Thereafter, two more have since been granted.

Meanwhile, calls for Mpho Phalatse's removal are still prevalent, with the President of the Patriotic Alliance's Gayton McKenzie reiterating his party's stance to oust Phalatse.

The Joburg Post spoke to McKenzie, where he expressed that the PA had a deal with the DA and other political parties, of which the party has not stuck to their agreement. McKenzie further added that removing Phalatse would see the City granted the short term and long-term loans and the granting of services for coloured and black people.

When asked whether the end to the relationship between his party and the DA could see the forging of other relationships, perhaps with the ANC in the future, McKenzie said that they are willing to work with "any party except the DA".

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
