#PlayOfTheWeek: If at first you succeed, then try and try again!

By Fentselite Mogotsi

This week’s Play of the Week is a lesson to trust the process but before we get there, let’s have a look at numerous events that owned the headlines in the sporting world.

It took Gianluigi Donnarumma, the new PSG goalkeeper five years as Italy’s goalkeeper to concede two goals in one match! What a record. Could he be in line to win the Ballon d’Or? Spain became the nation to taint the Euros 2021 winner and Player of the Tournament’s record when they fielded a bunch of teenagers that dismantled the Italian job in the UEFA Nations League.

From the safe gloves of Donnarumma to the furious ones of the Gipsy King! The much-anticipated bout between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury brought the fireworks and then some. This was the third time these two met and Wilder lost on both previous occasions so he promised to be third time lucky.

The fight went down to the wire and both fighters tasted the floor as they exchanged heavy blows, but it was the Gypsy King who again came out tops. The British fighter had to dig deeper in the last moments of the fight as he sent the American plummeting to the ground with a heavy right hook.

Tyson Fury believes he has proven to be the best fighter of his generation and says there was never much doubt he’d win again.

Speaking of heavyweights, the f1 had its drama as well in the Turkish Grand Prix. The leaderboard changed hands as Max Verstappen, who finished in the second position behind Mercedes Benz’s Valtteri Bottas now leads the pack ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who finished at 5th place. Who will win this year’s f1 championship? It’s a close race and still far from over.

What’s also far from over is the FIFA World Cup that will be hosted in Qatar in 2022 and this week’s Play of the Week goes to Bafana Bafana and their coach Hugo Broos. The team displayed a performance reminiscent of the Bafana of old, thumping Ethiopia in their own backyard with a convincing 3 away goals to only one.

Bafana Bafana now leads their group with 7 points ahead of Ghana with 6 after 3 games played.

There had been many negative reports in the Bafana camp leading up to their match, wit some players not being available at the eleventh hour and controversies about local teams not being team players as far as availing players for the national team but all that seems to be behind Bafana Bafana and the nation is proud.

The road to Qatar 2022 seems to be paved with Broos intention and news coming out of South Africa is that there could be fans allowed in the stadium when Bafana Bafana play their next match.

A toast to Teboho Mokoena; Mothobi Mvala and Evidence Makgopa on their goals.
