The African National Congress Remains Divided Over The Temporary Suspension Of E Toll Debt

By Joburg Post

SANRAL announced a temporary suspension of its process to recover e-toll debt from noncomplying motorists.

This comes as SANRAL has been struggling to collect revenue given the unpopularity of e-toll in the province. The decision has been met with mixed feeling by various political players. The minister of Finance Tito Mboweni has registered his disapproval at the announcement of SARS new commissioner,Edward Kieswetter. Mboweni implored SANRAL to

"reverse the decision, as it has implications for the bond market, it has implications for the fiscus. It has implications for their own credit rating and the credit rating of the country."
On the other end, the ANC in Gauteng welcomed the decision, arguing that had always stood against policy that would see Gauteng motorists carry additional transportation cost burdens. They argued that a new revenue and cost model must be used that did not add on to existing cost burdens carried by residents of Gauteng.

Gauteng Premier & ANCGP Chairman, David Makhura

In their media release statement, the ANCGP stated that "[they] remain confident that the process led by President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead to a long lasting solution to the e-tolls matter.
