While the death toll of the gas leak at the Angelo informal settlement in Boksburg has risen to 17 and 10 patients currently being treated at the Tambo Memorial Hospital in Ekurhuleni, the Gift of the Givers Foundation has stepped in to help those in distress.

Ekurhuleni's emergency management service (EMS) said the 17 people had died after nitrate oxide apparently leaked from a gas cylinder used by zama-zamas who operate from a shack in the informal settlement.

With agony and pain being the overall mood in the community at large, the Gift of the Givers representative in Ekurhuleni, Clifford Mabe said they have stepped in to bring refreshments particularly water, snacks and essentials to help those in distress in the area.

Meanwhile, The city of Ekurhuleni's spokesperson Zweli Dlamini has alluded the toxic gas leak is a result of illegal mining activities.

"From our preliminary investigations, this gas leak is a result of illegal mining activities, but we do hope that further investigations actually assist us in determining what really transpired here.

The City of Ekurhuleni also expresses its sincere heartfelt condolences to the affected families, hoping that they find strength during this difficult time," Dlamini said.
