Peter Mutharika’s second term may be short-lived as demo stations in support of the 78-year-old president relinquishing office grows.

Less than a month after his inauguration Malawi’s President Peter Arthur Mutharika has accused opposition party, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), of wanting to overthrow his government by force.

Following a narrow win at the polls by about 159,000 (according to Malawi’s election body) votes Mutharika secured a second term in office, this term however has already witnessed disturbing signs as police have fired tear gas at protesters supporting the opposition this after the third day of demonstrations against Mutharika calling for to resign.

Opposition parties called for protests disputing the official results of the latest elections held on the 21st of May 2019 with the MCP claiming that party leader Lazarus Chakwera had been cheated of his victory. Parties reported to the Malawian high court about 147 irregularities that took place during the elections, some of which included official recorded counts of votes being altered using correction fluid. The High court ordered the release of results after it claimed that it had dealt with the irregularities.

Demonstrations have grown in the capital city of Lilongwe since Tuesday.
