National Assembly Speaker informs President Ramaphosa of Parliament’s recommendation to fill electoral commission’s post

National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel, officially advising them of recent resolutions on statutory appointments adopted by the House. 
 
In her correspondence to the President, the Speaker informed him that the Assembly's plenary sitting of 14 June 2022 adopted the report of the Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs recommending Glen Mashinini for appointment to fill a vacancy in the Electoral Commission. The Assembly made the appointment under Section 6(2)(c) of the Electoral Act, 1996 (Act No 51 of 1996). 
 
 The Speaker also informed Minister Patel that, on 15 June, the Assembly approved the recommendation of the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition for the appointment of four candidates to the National Lotteries Commission. The candidates recommended are Rev Frank Chikane, Mr T Dlamini, Dr Nyameko Pityana and Mr Terry Tselane. 
 
The President and the Minister have powers in terms of the Constitution and the relevant law to make appointments to these institutions
