Ethiopian Prime Minister Steps into Sudan

By Neo Sithole

As Sudan’s situation quickly deters, Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed,  has stepped in after the alliance of Sudan’s main opposition groups have accepted his assistance as a mediator in stalled negotiations with the Transitional National Council. His arrival in Sudan comes after the African Union suspended Sudan’s membership on Thursday until a civilian rule is reinstated.

After spending Friday in Sudan’s capital separately meeting with Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), a coalition of groups that represent protesters, as well as a member of the military council Ahmed has urged that Sudan’s people show courage while moving towards a speedy, peaceful and inclusive democratic transition.

However, security forces have arrested and detained opposition leader Mohamed Esmat, an opposition politician. Another leader said to be detained is Ismail Jalab who is a leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, which a rebel movement after they had to meet with Ahmed.

The United Nations has also announced that they will be pulling its staff out of Sudan over growing concerns of safety.

A media blackout has been enforced by the current military authority following a crackdown by the military over this past week with people on social media reporting of rapes, the looting, and burning of houses at the hands of armed forces.

Ahmed has been praised for his diplomatic skill after successfully negotiating peace with Eritrea
