By Lindelwa Masuku

Photoworks is a platform that champions photography and provides opportunities for artists and audiences worldwide. Since its inception in 1995, Photoworks has been committed to bringing new experiences to audiences and opening up new ways to encounter photography.

Photoworks partners and collaborates with others to create, facilitate, and advocate for photography. This approach highlights how important Photoworks is for established and emerging photographers around the globe to create, capture, and showcase their work. The platform provides a unique opportunity for photographers to connect, engage, and share their work with a global audience.

Photoworks has upcoming events happening in May that showcase their commitment to supporting photographers at every level of their careers.

The first event is a collaboration by Photoworks and Devonshire Collective to commission new work from Arpita Shah. Over the last six months, Arpita Shah has worked with a group of young men from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds using photography, text, and sound to explore themes of home, identity, memory, and hope.

This exhibition consists of the work they created together in Eastbourne. The exhibition highlights the power of photography to connect people from different backgrounds and foster understanding and empathy.

The second event, The Ampersand/ Photo works Fellowship Open Call, is a transformative commissioning opportunity for a mid-career artist to complete a  new body of work. The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for an artist to push the boundaries of their practice and explore new ideas and techniques.

The fellowship program emphasises Photoworks' commitment to supporting and nurturing artists at every stage of their careers.

The third event, The Graduate Issue 2023, is an international opportunity where emerging artists are invited to submit their work for the chance of getting published in their next issue of Photography+.

This opportunity provides emerging photographers with exposure and recognition and highlights Photoworks' commitment to supporting and showcasing new talent.

Lastly, the "Worthing LGBTQ+ Photography Club" is a free program of creative  workshops for people aged 13 – 18 who identify as LGBTQ+ or unsure. The Photography Club is led by photographer Eva Louisa Jonas and starts on May 13 at AudioActive in Worthing.

This program is a testament to Photoworks' commitment to inclusivity and its belief that everyone should have the opportunity to engage with photography.
