South Africa under-17 captain Benjamin Wallis has revealed that Amajimbos are heading to the 2023 U/17 Africa Cup of Nations to successfully compete in the tournament and also aim at qualifying for the 2023 U/17 FIFA World Cup.

Amajimbos are expected to travel to Algeria on Friday the 21st of April 2023 as the tournament commences on the 29th of April until the 19th of May 2023.

With all of their group B matches being played at the Stade Mohamed-Hamlaoui Stadium, South Africa will open their account against the Moroccans U/17 side on the 30th of April before locking horns with Zambia on the of 3rd of May.

Duncan Crowie's men will then conclude their group B encounters with a date against Nigeria on the 6th of May 2023.

Despite Amajimbos being in a tricky group against some of the African giants, Wallis believes the team can go all the way and potentially clinch the crown in Algeria.

"I am firstly honoured by the recognition the coach has given me to lead the team at such a globally recognised tournament.

"It is a fantastic opportunity for us to go out there and show the world what we can do and I would also like to say thank you for the support structure that we have been receiving, it is honestly unbelievable and we are humbled,"  Wallis said.

Meanwhile, Crowie has expressed his sentiments around Wallis who was able to lead the side to the runners-up medal at the U/17 Cosafa Cup in Malawi last year.

Crowie believes Wallis' leadership role in the team will be influential in helping the side stay grounded and focused on the task at hand.

"He is a positive role model especially to the youngsters that we have in the team and the good thing about this crop of players is that they adhere to every rule and instruction that is imposed at their disposal," Crowie said.

The top four teams at the tournament will then qualify for the 2023 FIFA U/17 World Cup, to be staged in a yet to be announced country after FIFA withdrew Peru's hosting rights due to failure of meeting the requirements of hosting the global showpiece later this year.
