We Rise TV: The First African Children and Youth Channel.

By Phumzile Mavimbela

When passion, dedication meets African greatness incredibility is birthed. We Rise Tv is an example of such incredibility. We Rise TV, an online channel available on YouTube  was launched in September 2020 by the  I.M Possible Foundation, a Non Profit organisation founded by Ndumiso and Glenda Nkosi from Florida in the West of Johannesburg.

At the heart of the foundation is the vision to empower young people in realising and unleashing their true potential, overcoming life's everyday obstacles  while bearing in mind that with dedication and hard work, impossible is nothing but merely just a  word.

The foundation created a family show called The Peddy Family Show which was aired on Soweto TV and was soon after recognised by the African Union and was also nominated
for the Global Storm awards  under the media and communications category. This recognition motivated the foundation to go beyond creating one show but to create  the first African Children and Youth channel as recognised by the African Union.
The Peddy Family Show

Though the channel was launched early September the idea was birthed in
2019. The founder Ndumiso explains that him and his family always watch international TV channels. Looking at how excited their children always are when watching these channels him and  his wife  then identified  a gap for local and African content .

" We usually watch shows by Disney and Nickelodeon and see our children impersonating the characters , we then thought to ourselves  why not create our very own child Stars and super heroes in Africa"

The shows on the channel are mostly scripted  and created by thier two daughters Ntando Nkosi (9) and Langa Nkosi (15). When their peers and other children saw  the fun thier daughters were having they soon joined in. Now " we have Lilita Stuurman (9) and Prudence Dube (19) to name a few , creating content on the show ".

The shows are shot in Nkosi's home with the children designing the set and also directing how the content is produced.

" We turned our house into a studio, most of the content is created by amazing young stars. We have an 8 year old who has his own show aimed at teaching his peers how to play the piano, imagine that! "

Nkosi says they are amazed and blown away with the rate at which the channel is growing. When they launched the channel it received  over a thousand hits
within the first hour. They have people across the globe watching their  shows on uTube and they do not take that for granted.

For September they have partnered with SA Heritage Publishers and have a show where children read and dramatise  books about the most amazing African heroes and characters.

"Children are the biggest drivers and influencers,  Africa has not grasped the concept of how  influential children are they"

These are the current shows the channel has :
  • First year in high school
  • Tricky Thursday
  • Heritage readathon
  • Talent Friday
  • Girl Talk with Glenda T

" We have a new show called Sisendleleni with Ndumiso Nkosi coming out in October. We were granted permission by the office of the Minister of Trasport Fikile Mbalula to use his videos. We anticipate seeing the channel grow to bigger platforms thus we are open to an form support and contribution."
