"We are on a journey to revive the Glory days" - Arthur Zwane

Amid serious concerns from the fans about Amakhosi's performance this season, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane believes they have done well for a team that is still developing.

Since Zwane took over for his first appointment as the head coach of Amakhosi during the beginning of the 2022/23 season, the 49 year old has led Chiefs to 12 wins in the DSTV Premiership after 24 matches while losing 8 and just drawing 4 matches.

Despite concerns from the Amakhosi faithful about whether Zwane is the right man to lead Chiefs back into the glory days, '10111' as he was affectionately called during his playing days at Chiefs believes his side hasn't been playing badly for a team that is trying to gel.

Speaking ahead of Chiefs' league clash against Marumo Gallants at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night, Zwane said, "It all boils down to a lot of things; chemistry, preparation and having a long-term plan and that's something we have been trying to achieve from the beginning of the season."

Although Amakhosi are in contention for finishing as runners up in the DSTV Premiership this season, Zwane reiterated that there's still a long way to go in achieving the desired goal.

"We still have a long way to go, I wouldn't talk about or mention other teams because I wouldn't know what their plan is but for us, we are on a journey of trying to revive the glory days.

"That doesn't come easy though, it comes with challenges and honestly speaking, our performance this season hasn't been too bad for a team that has also assembled new players and a new technical team this season," said Zwane.

At the beginning of the new season Amakhosi released a number of players like Bernard Parker, Samir Nurkovic, Kearyn Baccus and Daniel Akpeyi just to name a few to make space for Yusuf Maart, Zitha Kwinika, Christian Saile and Caleb Bimenyimana.

Chiefs head into the clash against Gallants with a long injury list that has Nkosingiphile Ngcobo out for the rest of the season while Eric Mathoho, Khama Billiat and Cole Alexander are still recovering.

"Another factor that has negatively hampered our plans is injuries and suspensions because that means we can't have a consistent line-up that will enable the chemistry and combinations we want to develop.

"However, that shouldn't be used as an excuse because injuries and suspensions are a big part of football so we just have to work with what we have and make a success of it," Zwane added.

Meanwhile, Zwane has also commented on the huge uproar Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker and other football fans have raised about Chiefs being awarded penalties regularly and also seeing their opponents go down to 10 men.

"If you look at all the calls that were made by the officials, you can see they were legitimate, I mean if the keeper handles the ball out of his 18-yard area what do you call that? Zwane asked.

"So I wouldn't want to dwell too much on that because everyone has their own opinion and we respect that however, if you go through all the challenges and the red cards that were given to the opposition team, you will see we deserved them."

Zwane and his charges will aiming to make it six wins in a row and potentially move to the second spot on the DSTV Premiership log standings on 43 points with five matches remaining.
