Tottenham Hotspur part ways with Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent after just 16 months in charge, his departure follows a breakdown in relations between the manager and the club.

Conte was expected to leave Tottenham when his £15million-a-year contract ended in June, but he has left ahead of that date after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided his position was untenable.

This is due to the extraordinary rant Conte caused against his players after they threw away a 3-1 lead at rock-bottom Southampton on the 18th of March to cap off a miserable month of March for the club.

Conte who was very furious after the Southampton game didn't hold back in his post match conference saying, "We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don't want to help each other and I don't see a team."

Tottenham also got dumped out of both the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League while their hopes of finishing in the top four are also hanging by a thread.

A club statement read: "We can announce that head coach Antonio Conte has left the club by mutual agreement. We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.”

The statement also quoted the club chairman, Daniel Levy, who said: “We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our club and amazing, loyal supporters.”

Conte's No.2 Cristian Stellini will assume the role as acting head coach while Ryan Mason will take on the position as his assistant.

As Tottenham are already looking for a permanent replacement, Julian Nagelsmann, who left Bayern Munich last week, is among the managers Spurs want to talk to about the vacancy.

Meanwhile a return to the club for Mauricio Pochettino would excite a large section of the fanbase given his previous successes with Tottenham.

Tottenham next face Everton away from home at Goodison Park in the latest edition of the English Premier League on Monday the 3rd of April 2023.
