The third weekend of April sees the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup take centre stage while the English Premier League gets more intense and the Currie Cup continues.

1. Chiefs take on Royal AM in a feisty Nedbank Cup encounter

Targeting a tenth Nedbank Cup semi-final appearance since the inauguration of the PSL in 1996/97, and their first since 2019, Kaizer Chiefs will be traveling to Kwa-Zulu Natal for a date with Royal AM in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday evening.

Having defeated Maritzburg United and Casric Stars in the last 32 and 16 respectively to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament, Chiefs will look to use their unbeaten run of six matches in all competitions as a catalyst to do well against a tricky Royal AM side.

As the most successful team in the history of the Nedbank Cup winning the tournament for a record 13 times, Amakhosi will want to go all the way to the final and potentially clinch the crown in a bid to break the 8-year trophy drought at Naturena.

The last time the two sides met Chiefs walked away with all three points in the DSTV Premiership clash earlier this year and if history is anything to go by, Arthur Zwane's charges might just be successful in booking their spot in the semifinals.

Kick-off is at 18:00 on Sunday night.

2. Dondol Stars look to continue with their fine form in the Nedbank Cup against the mighty Buccaneers

Ahead of their much anticipated Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash against Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Dondol Stars captain Bafana Makhanya is confident his team will continue with their impressive winning streak in the tournament.

The Tshwane-based outfit shocked SuperSport United in the last 32 of the tournament at Atteridgeville before maintaining their finesse to knock out AmaZulu in the last 16 at the FNB Stadium.

Now having been drawn against another DSTV Premiership side, Dondol Stars will be keen on causing another upset on Saturday, speaking at the press conference ahead of the match against Pirates on Thursday, Makhanya said the team is ready and raring to go.

"We do not need motivation when we play against Pirates, all the players want to play in the match and they are fighting for positions in the starting XI, we are all fired up and it will be great if we can beat Pirates.

“We know why and how we have reached this stage and honestly there is a lot of work that has been done in the background, the two wins against SuperSport United and AmaZulu have put us under a lot of pressure, and now we have to work three times as hard against Pirates but we are ready," Makhanya said.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is wary of the threat Dondol poses, speaking ahead of the match on Thursday at the Nedbank Cup press conference, Riveiro alluded that Dondol should not be taken lightly.

"We're not thinking it's going to be a piece of cake, they have proved against some other clubs that it was not a piece of cake so we have prepared for a serious job," Riveiro said.

Coming to the encounter at the back of a win against Chippa United last weekend, Riveiro claims that his side is on a good run of form.

"I think it's the way we're expressing ourselves on the field and how competitive we are at this moment and what the players are doing and the atmosphere, everything tells you we're in a good space now because the stats are excellent," the Spaniard added.

Kick-off at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday afternoon is at 15:00.

3. Manchester City welcomes Leicester City while Arsenal travel to West Ham

The battle for supremacy continues in the English Premier League this weekend as defending champions Manchester City continue their chase of Arsenal when they welcome Leicester City to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Trailing Arsenal by six points with a game in hand, City will seek to narrow the gap down to three points against a wounded Leicester side.

Fresh from the 3-0 triumph over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola will want his side to keep the momentum going to continue putting the pressure on the Gunners.

Meanwhile, Arsenal know that a victory against West Ham on Sunday will help them create some breathing space between themselves and Manchester City with eight more games to play.

The Gunners dropped points last weekend playing out to a 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield and that proved to be costly with the remaining fixtures for Mikel Arteta's men not being easy at all.

After West Ham on Sunday, Arsenal will head to the Etihad Stadium for a date with City who will relish the moment ahead of the campaign's closure however, before that a tricky Southampton test awaits Arteta's men.

With the two-horse race seeming to go down to the wire, the next couple of weeks are going to have every football-loving fan on the edge of their seats as Arteta is looking for his maiden title as Arsenal's manager while Guardiola wants to continue dominating.

In other notable fixtures in the Premier League this weekend, Chelsea will host Brighton and Hove Albion while Nottingham Forest will clash with Manchester United and Aston Villa welcom Newcastle United at the Villa Park.

4. Currie Cup enters matchday 6

Today the Natal Sharks will continue their quest of penetrating into the top 2 of the Currie Cup standings when they welcome the Blue Bulls at the Kings Parks Stadium.

Coming from a 19-12 win over the Pumas last weekend, the Natal Sharks will be wary of the threat the Blue Bulls pose as the team from Pretoria thrashed the Griquas 40-3 last weekend.

Meanwhile, in another entertaining match in this weekend's Currie Cup action, the Western Province will lock horns with the Free State Cheetahs at the Cape Town Stadium.

Both teams head into the clash after comfortable victories last weekend against the Griffons and the Golden Lions respectively.

Sitting second on the log, the Free State Cheetahs will be aiming to get the much-needed victory in order to leapfrog the Pumas into the first spot on the table while a victory for the Western Province will see them move to the second spot.

On Sunday the Griffons face off against the Pumas and the Golden Lions hosts the Griquas.
