1. Manchester City are searching for their first UEFA Champions triumph against Inter Milan

Manchester City are heavy favourites to win their first-ever Champions League as the English Premier League champions take on one of Europe's old guard in Inter Milan on Saturday night.

Heading into the encounter after a 2-1 victory in the FA Cup Final last weekend, City are on course for a league treble that will undoubtedly put their manager Pep Guardiola in the history books.

Although this is only City's second European Cup final, it is their second in three seasons having lost an all-English contest 1-0 to Chelsea in Porto in 2021.

Standing in their way this time is an Inter side that literally has nothing to lose, the Italian giants will look to their 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Lautaro Martinez to once again play an influential role alongside Edin Dzeko upfront.

Although Inter are in their first final since winning the trophy under Jose Mourinho in 2010, they have lifted the trophy three times before, while City's only European silverware to date remains the Cup Winners' Cup, which they won in 1970 by beating Poland's Gornik Zabrze 2-1 in the final.

It surely promises to be an entertaining clash as kick-off at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul is at 21:00 South African time.

2. Al Ahly already have one hand on the CAF Champions League crown

Heading into the second leg of the CAF Champions League final against Wydad Casablanca on Sunday, Al Ahly will look to add more goals to their 2-1 aggregate lead from the 1st leg at the Cairo International Stadium last week Sunday.

On-form attacker Percy Tau will hope to continue where he left off in the first leg as he was part of the goal-scorers for the Red Devils along with Mahmoud Kahraba.

Tau, who has been called up for Bafana Bafana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Morocco, has become an increasingly important player in the Al Ahly set-up as he is the club’s second-highest goalscorer in the Champions League with five goals.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion player also has the most goal assists after registering five goals in 11 matches.

Meanwhile, in a repeat of last season’s final, Wydad will seek to use their home-ground advantage to overturn the 2-1 aggregate lead and retain the title.

Kick-off at the Stade Mohammed V is at 21:00 South African time.

3. It’s done or die for Maritzburg United

After losing 1-0 to Cape Town Spurs last weekend, Maritzburg United will need to defeat Casric Stars on Saturday to keep their hopes of staying in the DStv Premiership alive.

Fadlu Davids’ sides are currently sitting in the second position in the promotion playoff table with three points while Cape Town Spurs having won all their three games are comfortably at the summit of the table with nine points.

A win for Maritzburg United on Saturday against Casric Stars will see the battle for promotion to the DStv Premiership go down to the wire on the 14th of June when Cape Town Spurs travel to Pietermaritzburg for a date with Davids’ side.

However, should Maritzburg lose or draw against Stars on Saturday, Cape Town Spurs will be promoted to the DStv Premiership league.

4. KZN is ready for the Comrades Marathon

All roads will lead to KZN for the 96th edition of the Comrades marathon taking place in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday the 11th of June 2023.

With over 2 000 international runners from 84 countries and 17 920 from South Africa, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs MEC Siboniso Duma has revealed that this is indeed a historic moment for the province and the Comrades marathon.

“The Comrades Marathon Association has confirmed that this is one of the highest numbers of international entrants, making this a truly international event, and we hope these athletes will not only enjoy the race but take the time to explore our province – from the beach to the Berg.

I also believe that it is pleasing to see South Africa's SADC neighbours, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, and Malawi being listed among the top 20 international entries along with Zambia and Kenya from the rest of Africa," Duma said.

The main race is expected to start at 05:00 am on Sunday morning as the runners will be going at each other in the 87.7 km race.
