The last weekend of April sees Orlando Pirates travel to the Mbombela Stadium to face TS Galaxy while Mamelodi Sundowns are one step closer to reaching the CAF semi-finals and the Telkom Netball League continues.

1. The Buccaneers face a tricky challenge against TS Galaxy

After Kaizer Chiefs' victory against Chippa United on Freedom Day, Orlando Pirates will want to tighten their grip in their chase to finish second in the DSTV Premiership when they travel to Nelspruit for a date with TS Galaxy on Sunday afternoon.

Fresh from a 2-1 victory against Cape Town City last weekend, Pirates will know that a victory against The Rockets will increase their chances of securing the runners up spot in the league depending on how SuperSport United will play against Stellenbosch FC.

With only four matches remaining in the league for the Buccaneers, head coach Jose Riveiro is expecting his side to continue with the great run of form they have been displaying in the past six matches in all competitions in order to achieve the goal at hand.

"The challenge is nice and I want to find myself every season fighting for important things, for the possibility to get more titles for this club.

We are embracing this moment and we want to stay in this moment as much as possible, we want to finish second on log and advance to CAF next season and I think we can do that because we have excellent players that can get the job done for us," Riveiro said.

Pirates who are also still in contention for the Nedbank Cup, will head to the FNB Stadium to play against Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals of the competition on the 6th of May, but before that, they welcome Royal AM at the Orlando Stadium on the 3rd of May 2023 in a DSTV Premiership clash.

Kick-off at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday is 15:00 o'clock.

2. Mamelodi Sundowns welcome CR Belouizdad at Loftus Versfeld

Mamelodi Sundowns are one step closer to reaching the 2022/23 CAF Champions League semi-finals when they welcome CR Belouizdad in the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-final clash at Loftus Versfeld.

Sundowns head into the encounter holding a 4-1 aggregate lead from their trip in Algeria last week Saturday with goals from Neo Maema, Cassius Mailula, and a brace from Peter Shalulile giving Rhulani Mokwena's charges the much-needed victory at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Despite their strong performance in Algeria, Mokwena believes the tie is not yet over, speaking at a press conference on Thursday afternoon the Sundowns mentor reiterated that there's still a long way to go in the second leg.

"Stranger things have happened in football than a comeback from 4-1 down, there is a lot of humility that we have to show because we beat a very good side that we still have to face in Pretoria that is why we are just halfway through getting the job done.

It is the quarter-final of the CAF Champions League, it is tough and we should be under no illusions that the scoreline represents how physical and demanding this game is for us," Mokwena said.

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday is 16:00 o'clock.

3. It's getting more tense in the battle for supremacy in the English Premier League

Manchester City's Jack Grealish celebrating a goal

After defeating Arsenal 4-1 on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City are just two points adrift from claiming the top spot in the English Premier League with two games in hand.

Having played two games less in the English Premier League, City will travel to Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon knowing that a victory will take them to the summit of the table with seven more matches to play.

They will have to achieve the goal at hand on Sunday with the possibility of not having midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne after he asked to come off about 10 minutes before the final whistle on Wednesday night against Arsenal.

The 31-year-old has an unspecified knock that he experienced during the victory against Arsenal and he is a doubt for the trip to Fulham, meanwhile, regular defender Nathan Ake will also miss out on the clash due to a thigh injury.

With everything rounding up this season, there remains work to do for City, not just to retain their title but potentially become just the second English team to complete the treble of Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup in the same season.

Conquering Europe for the first time remains the biggest challenge, especially with holders Real Madrid waiting in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United will also have their shot at denying their local rivals matching the historic feat of Alex Ferguson's side in the 1998/99 season in the FA Cup final.

Kick-off at Craven Cottage on Sunday is 15:00 o'clock.

4. The Telkom Netball League continues in Polokwane

Having commenced on Thursday the 27th of April, the Telkom Netball League will continue to excite during the last weekend of April as the Gauteng Golden Fireballs kick-start Saturday's matches against the Kingdom Stars while the Eastern Cape Comets host the Tornados in the morning.

Other notable fixtures on Saturday will see the Southern Stings play against the Eastern Cape Aloes with Limpopo Baobabs locking horns with Free State Sonoblomo.

Sunday's action will see the Sunbirds welcome the Kingdom Queens while the Gauteng Golden Fireballs are in action again against the Eastern Cape Aloes.

With all the matches being played at the Ngoako Ramahlodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Polokwane, the Jaguars, and the Diamonds will play against the North West Flames and the Eastern Cape Comets respectively on Sunday too.

5. The Currie Cup enters round 8

The Pumas will travel to the Ellis Park Stadium on Friday afternoon aiming to tighten their grip at the summit of the Currie Cup table with a clash against the Golden Lions.

Coming from a narrow 25-24 victory against the Western Province last week, the Pumas will be aiming to capitalise on some poor showing from the Lions who went down 30-19 to the Blue Bulls last week, a defeat that saw the side from Johannesburg languish to the 7th spot on the log.

In another encounter on Friday, the Free State Cheetahs will welcome the Griffons at the Free State Stadium while on Saturday the Natal Sharks will entertain the Griquas at Kings Park Stadium with the Blue Bulls traveling to the Cape Town Stadium for a clash with the Western Province.
