The second weekend of April sees Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs continue their quest for a top 2 finish while Liverpool entertains Arsenal at Anfield and the Currie Cup continues.

1. Kaizer Chiefs head into the Marumo Gallants clash oozing with confidence

Fourth on the DSTV Premiership table, Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to make it six victories in a row when they welcome struggling Marumo Gallants at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Heading into the encounter with a sense of renewed verve and vigor, Chiefs head into the encounter at the back of a 2-1 home win against Stellenbosch FC in their last league game and take on a Gallant's side which, despite languishing in 16th place on the log standings have been battling away recently in an effort to avoid the drop.

The two teams shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw when they met at the Royal Bafokeng stadium back in September last year and this time around, Amakhosi will want to capitalise on their rich vein of form to bag all three points in front of their passionate home support.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Amakhosi head coach Arthur Zwane confirmed that midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo will miss the clash and the rest of the season while Khama Billiat has started jogging in a bid to return back to fitness.

"Well Mshini is out for the remainder of the season and he is not going to be available as he is still recovering from an injury he sustained.

On the brighter side though, Khama Billiat started jogging last week however, he is far from returning to action, for now he is still working with our bio before we can hand him over to the football actions, which is the coaches on the field." Zwane said.

Victory for the home team will see them win a third consecutive home league game, a feat the club last achieved in the 2019-20 season.

Kick-off at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening is at 20:00.

2. Orlando Pirates travel to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium for a date with Chippa United

Just like their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates head into the clash against Chippa United on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium oozing with confidence after their 2-0 victory against Richards Bay last weekend.

Chasing their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions against Chippa United on Saturday, Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has described the team as a well-rejuvenated side.

"The team is alive, the team is fresh, the team is ready and the team is hungry. We are aiming at finishing the season on a successful note and we will do that, we also want to do well and go all the way in the Nedbank Cup," Riveiro said.

Pirates who are currently occupying the second spot on the log standings have also been on a good run of form lately winning nine matches and losing three in the 12 matches played this year and Riveiro is pleased with how the results have came recently.

"The results are there, if we look at the results of 2023 you will find Pirates winning a lot of games however, we need to keep the consistency because with consistency we can build towards the goal that we want to achieve," Riveiro added.

Victory for the Buccaneers will see them cement their position as the runners-up in the league with five more matches to go.

Kick-off on Saturday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is at 17:30.

3. A wounded Liverpool entertains Arsenal

With an eight-point lead already over Manchester City, Arsenal will be looking to extend the lead to 11 points when they visit a struggling Liverpool side on Sunday in the latest installment of the Premier League.

Seeking to win the league title for the first time since 2004, the Gunners answered Manchester City’s call last weekend as they thumped Leeds United 4-1 at the Emirates after the Citizens had beaten contemporary rivals, Liverpool, by the same scoreline in the lunchtime kick-off.

Mikel Arteta's side will however, be without Eddie Nketiah due to an ankle injury, but the striker is expected to be available for selection at some stage this month while William Saliba is also out after suffering a back injury during Arsenal's recent Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

Meanwhile, there are concerns for Liverpool who could be without Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Joe Gomez who were not seen in the Liverpool training camp this week, sparking fears over their fitness ahead of the clash.

In a rather bleak season for Liverpool, a win against the Gunners will revive their hopes of finishing in the top four and securing that Champions League spot for next season.

4. The Blue Bulls welcome the Griquas while table-topping Pumas visit the Natal Sharks

Round five of the Currie Cup will see the Blue Bulls welcome the Griquas at Loftus Versfeld on Friday night.

The home side will look to redeem themselves after a disappointing 32-28 loss last weekend to the Griffons while the Griquas will be aiming for another victory this weekend after defeating the Western Province away from home last week.

In another mouthwatering clash on Friday evening, fourth on the table, Natal Sharks will face off against log leaders, the Pumas at Kings Park Stadium.

A victory for the home side will see them leapfrog the Golden Lions to go third on log while a win for the Pumas will see them extend their lead at the top to 24 points.

Meanwhile, the Western Province entertains the Griffons on Saturday and the Golden Lions welcome the Free State Cheetahs on Sunday.

5. Round three of the IPL is on the horizon

Friday will see the Super Giants take on the Sunrisers at the Ekana Sports City in the latest round of the IPL while the Rajasthan Royal will welcome the Delhi Capitals at the ACA Stadium.

The Capitals head into the encounter looking to register their first victory of the season after playing two matches and losing both of them.

Meanwhile, on Saturday the Mumbai Indians will host the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium with both sides below the top four teams in the opening exchanges of the season.

Sunday will see the Gujarat Titans take on the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Sunrisers Hyderabad will host the Punjab Super Kings.
