Spain won the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time in their history with Olga Carmona sweeping in the only goal for a deserved 1-0 victory over England in Sunday's final at the Stadium Australia in Sydney; Australia.

Spain's triumph is vindication for Jorge Vilda and the Spanish football federation, who stuck with the coach even after 15 players last year said they no longer wanted to represent their country under him.

The win also saw Spain become the fifth team to lift the Women's World Cup since the tournament began in 1991, joining the United States of America, Germany, Norway and Japan.

Orlando Pirates won 1-0 against Djabal Club in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first preliminary round.

A late Zakhele Lepasa goal was enough to see the Soweto giants take a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg of the tie next week.

Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro made several changes to his starting XI, with Sipho Chaine, Bandile Shandu, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Tapelo Xoki, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Patrick Maswanganyi and Zakhele Lepasa all dropping to the bench.

Richard Ofori, Sandile Mthethwa, Innocent Maela, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, Fortune Makaringe and Eva Nga all came into the team after the 1-1 draw against Chippa United.

Pirates dominated the first half of the encounter with Eva Nga and Monnapule Saleng both failing to convert their chances.

Lepasa, who had just replaced Eva Nga, had a massive chance in the 64th minute after a mis-timed punch by the goalkeeper ended up in front of his feet but his volley got blocked before the goal line.

The home side had a chance on the counter a minute later but Innocent Maela came to the rescue with a superb tackle.

Saleng had another great chance in the 81st minute but his shot got punched onto the post by the goalkeeper however, Lepasa was once again in the right spot and netted the much-needed winner in the 88th minute.

Ofori was called into action in injury-time to prevent the home side from finding a late equaliser and see the Buccaneers take home an important first-leg win.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the summit of the table after defeating Chippa United 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday night.

South Africa's Wayde Van Niekerk

Wayde van Niekerk cruised to victory in his opening heat of the 400m at the World Championships in Budapest on Sunday morning.

Running in heat 2, the world record holder who is bidding to reclaim the world title he last won in 2017, sailed to victory in a time of 44.57.

Speaking after the race, Van Niekerk said: “Today was a positive effort as I kept the race controlled and Matt Hudson-Smith had a very good run on the inside of me so I just used him until the last 100m and then fought for the first place so I am satisfied with how the run went."

"The heats and the semifinals are about surviving so I had to read my competitors and gauge off of them, that's what I did in the heats and I think it should be a similar strategy in the semis and then in the final go all of out, it was a great opening so I can’t complain," Van Niekerk added.
