The second weekend of June saw Manchester City clinch their first ever UEFA Champions League title while Al Ahly won their 11th CAF Champions League title and Tete Dijana won the 2023 Comrades Marathon.

1. Manchester City are the Kings of Europe

Manchester City tasted Champions League glory at last on Saturday night as a second-half Rodri strike gave the favourites a 1-0 victory over Inter Milan in a tense final at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium to allow Pep Guardiola's side to complete a remarkable treble.

Rodri's 68th-minute strike was enough to see Guardiola's blue and white army banish the memories of two years ago when they lost out to Chelsea in the 2021 final.

As tears of joy were shed during the final whistle from both the City players and their faithful, what was only just a dream from Guardiola's charges became reality as the mountain Manchester City have struggled to conquer had been climbed.

The win also completed the treble for the citizens as they became the second team to win the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup, joining arch-rivals Manchester United as the only English club to achieve the feat.

In the midst of celebrating the maiden Champions League triumph, the win against Inter also meant Guardiola has now won 14 major trophies since joining the club in 2016, a collection comprising of five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, one Champions League, and two Community Shields.

The Spaniard also becomes the first manager to win two European trebles, having achieved the feat in 2009 with Barcelona and now with City in 2023.

City will now begin the 2023/24 season with an opportunity to play in the European Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time, as well as having the chance to become the first team in the history of English football to win four league titles in succession.

2. Maritzburg United keep PSL hopes alive

Maritzburg United earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Casric Stars at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium on Saturday to keep their hopes of staying in the PSL next season alive.

The victory took Maritzburg to six points on the PSL promotion table while first-place Cape Town Spurs are currently at the summit of the table with nine points.

The two sides will meet each for the last play-off match on Wednesday with Maritzburg needing nothing but a victory to retain their spot in top-flight football while a victory or draw for Cape Town Spurs will see them join Polokwane City next season in the DStv Premiership.

Kick-off at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night is 19:30.

3. Al Ahly are the Kings of Africa

Al Ahly secured a record-extending 11th CAF Champions League title with a 3-2 aggregate win over Wydad Casablanca on Sunday evening.

The Egyptians came into the tie leading 2-1 on aggregate from the first leg in Cairo last weekend.

Looking to use their home ground to their advantage, Wydad went to half-time leading 1-0 after Yahia Attiyat Allah broke the deadlock in the 27th minute.

Heading into the second half on course for another CAF Champions League triumph, Wydad consolidated matters until the 78th minute when Al Ahly restored parity on the night but led 3-2 on aggregate through a beautiful header by Mohamed Abdelmonem.

It was all Al Ahly in the final stages of the match as they finally redeemed themselves from last season's disappointment.

The victory also means Al Ahly's attacking midfielder Percy Tau is the first South African to win two CAF Champions League trophies having achieved the feat before with Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

4. Tete Dijana is the 2023 Comrades Marathon champion

South African ultramarathon runner Tete Dijana emerged victorious in the prestigious 2023 Comrades Marathon for the second consecutive year, achieving a remarkable feat with a record-breaking time of 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 58 seconds.

Dijana beat off a strong challenge from his Nedbank Running Club international teammate Piet Wiersman, coming in a mere two seconds ahead of the Dutchman, who chased him at the finish line.

Edward Mothibi came in third to close off the podium, also under the previous record.

Meanwhile, Gerda Steyn won the women’s race of the 96th edition of the marathon, in a time of 5:44:56.

The Two Oceans winner also broke the down-run record, which was previously held by Frith van der Merwe in 1989 at a time of 5:54:43.

This year’s race was a downhill run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, with about 17 000 runners taking part in the 87km race.

Steyn went home with a whooping R1.2 million that consists of R500 000 for coming first, another R500 000 for creating the new down-run record of 5 hours, 44 minutes and 54 seconds, plus an extra R200 000 for being the first South African woman to finish the race.
