The first weekend of May was full of surprises as SAFA CEO advocate Tebogo Motlanthe resigned while Sandile Mthethwa took Pirates to the final of the Nedbank Cup and Sekhukhune shocked Stellenbosch at the Danie Craven Stadium.

1. Derby delight for Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates players celebrating after winning the Soweto Derby on Saturday against Kaizer Chiefs

After defeating their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro believes their much-improved mental space played a huge role in their breakthrough semi-final victory.

Having lost the five successive derbies in a row, Pirates pulled their revenge when it mattered the most as they are on the brink of their second successive trophy in a row after already winning the MTN 8 last year.

Speaking during his post match interview, Riveiro said, "Everything was good today and we managed to play with our rhythm, but losing games is not nice and isn't funny, our obligation is to learn from these games and now it's easy to say that because we have won this game."

Riviero furthermore alluded that, Pirates' mental approach during the game against Chiefs was more different compared to the previous derbies.

"There were many things that affected us that I can't say out loud, those didn't allow us to be in the condition that we wanted to be in but in this game, things were different in our camp, and it showed in that we were competitive in a scenario that we weren't competitive in before." Riveiro added.

Pirates will now face Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup final on the 27th of May at Loftus Versfeld.

2. Brandon Truter leads Sekhukhune United to their first cup final

Sekhukhune United advanced to their very first cup final on Sunday evening as they defeated Stellenbosch FC 4-3 on penalties in the Nedbank Cup semi-final at the Danie Craven Stadium.

Substitute goalkeeper Ntokozo Mtsweni made two saves in the penalty shoot-out to pave the way for Sekhukhune United after 120 minutes of football, failed to produce a goal.

Sekhukhune players Victor Letsoalo, Edwin Gyimah, Daniel Cardoso and Pogiso Mahlangu scored their spot kicks while Sibusiso Vilakazi missed.

With a spot in the final up for grabs, Nhlanhla Mgaga, Junior Mendieta and Fawaaz Basaden scored their penalties for the hosts while Iqraam Rayners and Juane Ortiz saw theirs saved by Mtsweni.

The win means Babina Noko reach the Nedbank Cup final for the first time in the club's history and they now will take on Orlando Pirates at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on the 27th of May.

3. SAFA CEO resigns

Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe during a media briefing

South African Football Association CEO Teboho Motlanthe tendered his resignation to the president of the association Danny Jordaan on Friday evening.

Motlanthe’s sudden resignation came as a shock to the national association and it is believed that SAFA will confirm chief operations officer Lydia Monyepao as an interim replacement for Motlanthe, after the latter quit in a huff on Friday.

Motlanthe, who has been the association's chief executive officer since 2021 after replacing Gay Mokoena, was together with Jordaan leading SAFA's bid to win the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup hosting rights.

Motlanthe's resignation also comes at the back of the PSL's announcement of its intention to arrange a meeting with Sports Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa as well as CAF President Patrice Motsepe after SAFA highlighted several concerns that they wish to discuss with the PSL during the meeting.

In another entertaining weekend of Currie Cup action, the Natal Sharks were too good for the Blue Bulls as they made a big statement at Loftus Versfeld humiliating the Blue Bulls 41-27.

The victory was laid on the foundation of an utterly dominant effort from the Sharks’ forward pack, who reigned supreme at the set-pieces and brutally overwhelmed their counterparts up front.

The victory also saw the side from Natal move up to the third spot on the Currie Cup log after 9 matches played while the Blue Bulls remain rooted to the seventh spot.

In another encounter on Saturday night, the Free State Cheetahs did just enough to beat the Western Province 26-21 at the Free State Stadium while the Pumas cemented their spot in the top four after thrashing the Griffons 45-25 at the Nelspruit Rugby Club.

Meanwhile, the Griquas edged the Golden Lions 25-21 at the Windhoek Draught Park.
