The first weekend of May was full of surprises as SAFA CEO advocate Tebogo Motlanthe resigned while Sandile Mthethwa took Pirates to the final of the Nedbank Cup and Sekhukhune shocked Stellenbosch at the Danie Craven Stadium.
1. Derby delight for Orlando Pirates
After defeating their arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro believes their much-improved mental space played a huge role in their breakthrough semi-final victory.
Having lost the five successive derbies in a row, Pirates pulled their revenge when it mattered the most as they are on the brink of their second successive trophy in a row after already winning the MTN 8 last year.
Speaking during his post match interview, Riveiro said, "Everything was good today and we managed to play with our rhythm, but losing games is not nice and isn't funny, our obligation is to learn from these games and now it's easy to say that because we have won this game."
Riviero furthermore alluded that, Pirates' mental approach during the game against Chiefs was more different compared to the previous derbies.
"There were many things that affected us that I can't say out loud, those didn't allow us to be in the condition that we wanted to be in but in this game, things were different in our camp, and it showed in that we were competitive in a scenario that we weren't competitive in before." Riveiro added.
Pirates will now face Sekhukhune United in the Nedbank Cup final on the 27th of May at Loftus Versfeld.
