The second weekend of May saw the Motsepe Foundation Championship come to an end as Polokwane City returned to top-flight football while in the DStv Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs' hopes for continental football were crushed and Orlando Pirates are still looking for a spot in the CAF Champions League.
1. Polokwane City clinch the title on the last day
Heading into match-day 30 of the Motsepe Foundation Championship sitting third on the log, Polokwane City won the league title after hammering Pretoria Callies 4-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.
The Polokwane-based side however needed Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars to drop points in their respective games while a win for them would mark their return to top-flight football.
Claiming a whopping R5 Million, Polokwane City won the league by virtue of a better goal difference between themselves and Cape Town Spurs as the sides finished the league on 54 points each.
The Cape Town side played out to a 1-1 draw against University of Pretoria while Casric Stars played out to a 2-2 draw against All Stars FC.
Both teams[Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars] will head into the promotion playoffs where they will meet the team that finishes position 15 in the DStv Premiership after match-day 30.
2. Arthur Zwane gets attacked as Amakhosi lose to SuperSport
Embattled Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane was hit by a bottle and suffered a facial cut after a 1-0 loss to SuperSport United on Saturday afternoon at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
When various objects were hurled at Zwane and his players in the North West mining town of Rustenburg, the coach was struck underneath the eye and needed treatment immediately with Police personnel escorting the 49-year-old Amakhosi mentor to safety.
Before those horrific scene's occurred, Zambian international Gamphani Lungu scored the solitary goal for Matsatsantsa a Pitori in the 40th minute as Gavin Hunt's charges tightened their grip on chasing for the runners-up spot on the DStv Premiership table.
The victory also meant that Amakhosi have now lost 11 matches in the 2022/23 league campaign while also forfeiting a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup competition.
The Glamour Boys will return back to Johannesburg for their final league match against Cape Town City on Saturday the 20th of May at the FNB Stadium.
