Top 5 sporting moments of the weekend

The second weekend of May saw the Motsepe Foundation Championship come to an end as Polokwane City returned to top-flight football while in the DStv Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs' hopes for continental football were crushed and Orlando Pirates are still looking for a spot in the CAF Champions League.

1. Polokwane City clinch the title on the last day

Heading into match-day 30 of the Motsepe Foundation Championship sitting third on the log, Polokwane City won the league title after hammering Pretoria Callies 4-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon.

The Polokwane-based side however needed Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars to drop points in their respective games while a win for them would mark their return to top-flight football.

Claiming a whopping R5 Million, Polokwane City won the league by virtue of a better goal difference between themselves and Cape Town Spurs as the sides finished the league on 54 points each.

The Cape Town side played out to a 1-1 draw against University of Pretoria while Casric Stars played out to a 2-2 draw against All Stars FC.

Both teams[Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars] will head into the promotion playoffs where they will meet the team that finishes position 15 in the DStv Premiership after match-day 30.

2. Arthur Zwane gets attacked as Amakhosi lose to SuperSport

Embattled Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane was hit by a bottle and suffered a facial cut after a 1-0 loss to SuperSport United on Saturday afternoon at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

When various objects were hurled at Zwane and his players in the North West mining town of Rustenburg, the coach was struck underneath the eye and needed treatment immediately with Police personnel escorting the 49-year-old Amakhosi mentor to safety.

Before those horrific scene's occurred, Zambian international Gamphani Lungu scored the solitary goal for Matsatsantsa a Pitori in the 40th minute as Gavin Hunt's charges tightened their grip on chasing for the runners-up spot on the DStv Premiership table.

The victory also meant that Amakhosi have now lost 11 matches in the 2022/23 league campaign while also forfeiting a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup competition.

The Glamour Boys will return back to Johannesburg for their final league match against Cape Town City on Saturday the 20th of May at the FNB Stadium.

3. Pirates held by Sekhukhune United

Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United shared the spoils in the penultimate round of the DStv Premiership as the two sides played out to a 1-1 draw at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Starting the match like a house on fire, Orlando Pirates broke the deadlock in the 31st minute as Monnapule Saleng found Terrence Dzvukamanja inside the penalty box with an accurate cross, and the Zimbabwean international easily guided the ball into the back of the net to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

The lead was short-lived though as former Pirates defender Edwin Gyimah restored parity for the visitors seven minutes before halftime to send the two teams to halftime level at 1-1.

With Pirates desperately looking for a second goal in the second half, they threw everything at Sekhukhune United however, Babina Noko's stagnant defense was the difference at the end of the day between the two sides.

The draw means the Buccaneers will have it all to play for if qualifying for the CAF Champions League is anything to go by in the last match of the season against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday the 20th of May.

4. Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca play out to a 0-0 draw

Mamelodi Sundowns earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final at the Mohammed V Stadium on Saturday night.

Despite Sundowns not getting the all-important away goal in the encounter, Rhulani Mokwena's charges will be pleased with how they played particularly taking into consideration that they finished the match with nine players after Neo Maema and Marcelo Allende both received red cards.

Sundowns will now hope to use their home-ground advantage for the second leg on Saturday the 20th of May when the two teams meet at Loftus Versfeld.

The winner of the encounter on Saturday will meet either Al Ahly or ES Tunis in the final.

5. The Blue Bulls humbled the Griquas while the Natal Sharks edged the Pumas

Round 10 of the Currie Cup saw the Natal Sharks defeat the Pumas 24-22 at the Mbombela Stadium on Friday night.

Nevaldo Fleurs kicked two late conversions for the Sharks as the visitors completed a historic comeback after going down 22-10 heading into the last 10 minutes of the match.

The win means the Sharks move into the third spot on the log with 33 points, elsewhere, the Blue Bulls hammered the Griquas 40-20 at the Windhoek Draught Park while the Golden Lions got the better of the Free State Cheetahs at the Free State Stadium by winning 33-26.

The Griffons' woes continued as they went down 25-21 to the Western Province at the North Habour Stadium, the defeat means that the Griffons are the only team to yet register 10 points and above in the latest Currie Cup log standings.
