There is progress for some Joburg residents as Joburg Water sends water tankers

By Tshegofatso Makola

Joburg Water has sent almost 30 water tankers in a bid to deal with the ongoing water issue that has been affected Johannesburg for the past few weeks. Following an order from the Executive Mayor of the City, Thapelo Amad, to dispatch water tankers to affected areas, the utility has since began to do so.

Yesterday, residents of some areas in Joburg South took to the streets to picket outside the Joburg Water depot. This following over three weeks of not having water. Many were calling for an immediate solution to the issue, with others criticising Joburg Water and saying that water was a right and not a luxury.

The Brixton, Berea, and Hursthill 2 reservoirs were isolated late Thursday night while the Crown Gardens and Alexander Park outlets remain closed.

The pump failure at Rand Water's Eikenhof station last weekend, saw many residents living in regions who's reservoirs are usually supplied by this station, heavily affected.

Vandalism has also been cited as an issue that has resulted in the damage of some water systems, leaving water levels in reservoirs, low.

Despite the improvement of water supply in some areas, the Crown Gardens reservoir has been closed with both of its towers being empty.

According to Joburg Water, alternative water supply will be provided to Crown Gardens whilst in other water-scarce areas like Boskop and Honeydew, water trcks have since been provided.

Meanwhile, many residents of Johannesburg have since expressed their frustrations, adding that the provision of water tankers is not enough.
