The UEFA Champions League is back with a bang

Manchester City will play Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night with the first leg at the Etihad Stadium after reaching the last eight for the sixth successive season, but they are yet to lift the trophy.

The closest City came was under Guardiola two years ago, when they made their only appearance, to date, in the final but lost 1-0 to Chelsea in Porto.

This will be the seventh meeting between Manchester City and Bayern Munich in European competition, with each both sides alternating victories across the previous six, with three of the encounters each being in the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City have won two of the previous occasions when hosting Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League with their one defeat coming against Pep Guardiola’s Bayern in October 2013.

Since losing four consecutive away games against English sides in the UEFA Champions League between 2005 and 2011, Bayern Munich have only lost on two of their 10 such trips since and won three of the last four.

The hosts will be buoyed following their 4-1 dismantling of Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend, especially as Erling Haaland returned from injury to score two more goals in what has been a fantastic season for Haaland in his debut season at City.

But Bayern Munich love this competition historically and come into this clash under new coach Thomas Tuchel, who is targeting more success against City..

The German has won three of his five meetings against the Manchester club, including a famous 1-0 victory in the Champions League final with Chelsea back in 2021.

Bundesliga leaders Bayern have won Europe's premier club competition six times while City are still hunting for their first title, despite that record Tuchel feels all the pressure will be on the Manchester side.

Earlier on Monday, Bayern announced that Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting would miss the match with a knee injury however, Tuchel said he had a shortlist of replacements.

“There is no reason Serge Gnabry couldn't play as a No 9. He may not have the height, but nor do Thomas Muller or Sadio Mane,”  Tuchel said, adding that the Cameroon international would be missed when defending set pieces.

Bayern will also be glad to have Sadio Mane back in the team after he was declared fit by the Bayern medical team.

Meanwhile City's only notable absence is Phil Foden, who remains unavailable after having appendix surgery.
