Mamelodi Sundowns legend and Ambassador Tiyani Mabunda has described Sundowns' DSTV Premiership success as an impeccable achievement across South African football.

This follows Sundowns' sixth consecutive PSL title after winning the 2022/23 DSTV Premiership title with seven matches yet to be played.

Sundowns won the crown after SuperSport United played out to a 1-1 draw against Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

SuperSport was the only team with a remote mathematical chance of catching up to their neighbours but after being held to a 1-1 stalemate, they can now only amass a maximum of 58 points – if they win all their remaining six games with Sundowns already on 59 points with seven matches in hand.

Speaking to the Sundowns ambassador on Monday morning, Mabunda said "It's truly a joyous moment to celebrate such an achievement at Mamelodi Sundowns, a big congratulations to the team, players, coaches, medical staff, management, supporters and the board at large, this title really shows that there's a lot of good work that's been done at the club."

Sundowns has also won the league title at the back of creating some astonishing history in the current campaign by becoming the first team to go unbeaten in 17 league matches after their last loss was against SuperSport United on the 2nd of September 2022 and Mabunda believes that was made possible by the consistency and hard work of the players.

"This current crop of Sundowns' players are really unbelievable, looking at the number of records they have broken so far it can only be attributed to hard work and consistency, winning the league with seven games to go while leading the second placed team with 19 points is exceptional.

"Another element that has played a pivotal role in the success of winning this sixth league title is the commitment the players have shown every week to go out there and win every match, winning the Premiership once again is a huge achievement because overcoming 15 teams once again to the title really shows that the team is destined for greatness and the players want to continue writing their names in the history books," Mabunda said.

Mabunda who is also a PSL title winner with Mamelodi Sundowns during his playing days also touched on being happy for the likes of Cassius Mailula, Marcelo Allende and Siyabonga Mabena who will be receiving their first PSL gold medals on the 20th of May 2023 when the league concludes.

"Well winning the PSL title for the first time is truly an exciting experience and I am happy for Mailula, Mabena and Nkosi to just name a few because this will also inspire and motivate them as youngsters of Mamelodi Sundowns to improve and do better in their game of play.

"It's one thing to become a professional footballer but it's another to become a professional football player and also win accolades because you can always reflect back on the accolades and see your growth as an individual and at Mamelodi Sundowns that has been our culture to have players that win accolades and titles both for the team and individually too," Mabunda added.

The 34 year old Mabunda also urged the youngsters to remain grounded and rooted to the mandate at hand because the league is not yet over and there's still more to be achieved.

Sundowns will receive a guard of honour from Cape Town City when they meet on Tuesday in a DSTV Premiership fixture at Loftus Versfeld with kick-off being 19:30.
