The Atlas Lions stun Brazil for the first time in their history

For the first time in their history, Morocco defeated Brazil 2-1 in a friendly international on Saturday night at Grand Stade de Tanger Stadium in Morocco.

Sofiane Boufal broke the deadlock for the north African side in the 29th minute before Brazil's newly appointed captain Casemiro equalised in the 67th minute.

Just as it seemed like the encounter was heading into a draw, Abdelhamid Sabiri struck the winner in the 79th minute as Morocco showed that becoming the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals last year was no fluke.

Brazil who also had an interim coach Ramon Menezes heading into the match fielded only 10 of the 23-man squad that was present at the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup with Neymar Jnr. out due to injury.

The Brazilian Football Confederation hopes to be able to announce the name of its new coach before the start of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in September with Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti being one of the possible candidates to take over permanently.

During the post match interview, Brazil captain Casemiro said, "I think we played a good game and did everything as far as possible to win, I wouldn't say we lacked understanding. It's about putting into practice the ideas of a new coach."

Before kick-off at the Grand Stade de Tanger stadium on Saturday, both teams paid tribute to Pele, who died last December at the age of 82.

Before the encounter on Saturday night, Morocco had suffered defeats in their only two other meetings with Brazil going down 2-0 in an international friendly in 1997 and also losing 3-0 in the group stages of the 1998 World Cup in France.
