Sundowns humble Marumo Gallants in Free State

By Neo Poho

Mamelodi Sundowns had Peter Shalulile to thank after they defeated Marumo Gallants 3-1 at the Free State Stadium to reach the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup on Thursday night.

Shalulile's hat-trick was enough to see Sundowns become the first team to book their spot in the last 8 of the competition.

The Namibian broke the deadlock in the 8th minute of the match after a beautiful cross from the edge of the box by Neo Maema was handled with ease by Shalulile before placing the ball in the back of the net for Masandawana'a first goal.

At a packed Bloemfontein Stadium, Shalulile sent the crowd into a frenzy as he capitalised from some poor goalkeeping by Washington Arubi for Sundowns' second goal.

Denis Onyango was in goal for Rhulani Mokwena's charges and the Ugandian international could only hear from the crowd that Marumo Gallants had pulled a goal back through a wonder strike from Boitumelo Pheko just before halftime.

The two sides slowed the tempo a bit in the second half as Sundowns started to manage the match keeping their opponents at bay.

Shalulile completed the hat-trick in the 74th minute to seal the victory for Sundowns who will now set their focus on the DSTV Premiership encounter with Stellenbosch FC at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday.

Shalulile's hat-trick also means that the 29-year old is now the all time record scorer of the Nedbank Cup with 12 goals surpassing former teammate Hlompho Kekana who netted 11 goals in the competition.

The remaining Nedbank Cup last 16 encounters will play from next week Wednesday till the weekend with some entertaining clashes like Orlando Pirates against Venda Football Academy, Kaizer Chiefs hosting Casric Stars and the all KZN derby between Golden Arrows and Royal AM.
