Stellenbosch shock Sundowns to reach Nedbank Cup Semi-finals

By Neo Poho

For the first time in the club's history Stellenbosch FC have reached the Nedbank Cup semi-finals after defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Athlone  Stadium on Saturday night.

Heading into the encounter as one of the only few teams to take points from Sundowns in the league this season, Stellenbosch started the match on the front foot and also managed to keep Sundowns at bay for the larger part of the first half.

With halftime fast approaching, Sundowns broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Stellenbosch FC goalkeeper Lee Langeveldt scored an own goal to send the visitors into the break leading 1-0.

Despite going to halftime on the back foot, Stellenbosch started the second half the same way they started the first, dominating ball possession and making life difficult for the defending champions.

The pressure finally paid off when Iqraam Rayners restored parity for Steve Barker's side in the 48th minute before sending the crowd into a frenzy after he doubled the lead for the Stellies in the 57th minute.

Sundowns then threw everything at Stellenbosch with the likes of Cassius Mailula and Peter Shalulile finding it hard to penetrate through the Stellies defenders.

Steve Barker's side then held on to clinch the famous victory and the 55 year old was delighted with how his team managed to get the victory.

"Well first of all I am extremely proud of the team because they dominated from the first minute until the last, I am also glad that we stuck to our game plan and it worked for us, I told the players that if they want to be the best they have to beat the best and today they delivered a top class performance," Barker said.

Meanwhile a disappointed Rhulani Mokwena admitted his side was just not good enough on the day, "Congratulations to Stellenbosch FC and we wish them well in the semi-finals, a very disappointing performance from our team and it's simply because Stellenbosch was better than us from the first whistle," Mokwena said.

Stellenbosch join Orlando Pirates who defeated Dondol Stars 5-4 on penalties earlier on at the Peter Mokaba Stadium after the two sides played out to a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
