South Africa U/23 fail to qualify for AFCON

After playing out to a 0-0 draw against Congo in the second leg of the U/23 AFCON qualifier on Monday evening, the South African U/23 side have failed to qualify for the U/23 AFCON.

Heading into the encounter after playing 1-1 last week Thursday in the first leg, David Notoane's men couldn't get the much needed goals to turn the encounter around in a bid to qualify for AFCON.

Notoane made several changes to the team that started on Thursday with Kaizer Chiefs' Mduduzi Shabalala, Cape Town Spurs' Boitumelo Radiopane and SuperSport United's Thapelo Maseko all being included in the starting XI.

With the encounter being played at the Massamba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville, the South African side found it hard to settle into the encounter as the two sides went to halftime locked at 0-0.

In an encounter that was intense, Notoane made some changes in the second half bringing on Samkelo Zwane, Ashley Cupido and Bradley Cross in a bid to try and get a goal.

Unfortunately for the South African side it wasn't to be as the Congo U/23 side advanced to the U/23 AFCON taking place in Morocco this year by away goals rule.

The defeat also means Notoane's men have also missed out on securing a spot in the 2024 Olympics.
